The Four Sins

He showed up again. The horrifying creature from my dream the other night showed up right in front of me. I felt disgusted over its four dimensional face.
“You are not doing well,” he spoke.
“Who are you anyway?” I asked trying to get to the point.
“You know me, I am your sins. Your four major sins.”
This was not a dream. It was happening in real. The strange creature was standing right in front and was talking to me.
“I’ve seen you before in my dream,” I told him.
“It was not your dream,” he retorted.
I was shocked and experienced goosebumps.
“You were brought here that night,” he continued, “and you were assigned a test, which by the way you are not doing very well.”
“What was the test?” I asked fearfully. “Can you remind me please?”
“See? You don’t even remember.”
“No, I do… I do… It was about Wrath, Envy and Greed.”
“And what were you told about them?”
“Something like trying to have a self control,” I recalled.
“Today I’m going to reveal your fourth sin.”
I was listening impatiently.
“Vanity,” he declared, “this is your fourth and probably the most dangerous sin of all.”
“Is that my sin?”
“Oh, you have no idea.”
His attitude left me a little suspicious, so I spoke up, “You know what, you sound like a devil. You look like a devil. But you don’t behave like a devil. I doubt you because you talk like humans.”
“Okay, if you don’t beleive me… call one of those security guards and ask them to take me away from here.”
“You know what, I might just do that.”
I switched on the torch of my cell phone and waved it towards the guards. After few seconds, one of the guards came by my side and asked, “What is it sir?”
“I want you to take him away from here,” I said pointing my finger towards the creature.
“Who?” he asked looking around where I was pointing.
“Can’t you see this person?” I asked.
“Who are you talking about?”
I got really terrified now and looked back at this mysterious creature that said, “Only you can see me, because I’m your sins.”
I stared at him for a second then asked the security guard to leave me here alone.
“So now you believe me?” the creature asked.
“What do you want from me?”
“Don’t ask me that… you know exactly what I’m here for”
“I don’t understand. How can I control these sins? Why am I being put in this test?”
“You cannot ask why… you are a human and every human is being tested”
“Alright… so I just have to control myself when it would come to Wrath, Envy, Greed and Vanity?”
“Yes.”
“What is the penalty for failing this test?”
“You’ll be alive but you’ll be destroyed. You’ll be ruined… ruined enough to say that I have no reason to live.”
“… okay” I said in a tensed tone.
“And if you try to escape, you will end up in hell.”
“Oh my God!” I whispered in nervousness.
“I’ll leave a hint for you. Your four sins shall be found among people.”
“Excuse me?”
“The source of your sins would be the people around you.”
He slowly disappeared. I felt kind of obnoxious and few moments later, I blacked out and lost my consciousness.

The Four Sins

Next morning as I opened my eyes, I found myself lying on the ground at Jheel Park. I stood up immediately and looked around remembering what happened last night. I was scared and in fact, I have never been this scared in my entire life.
“You okay, sir?” I heard a voice from behind.
I got a bit startled and turned around to see. It was the security guard whom I spoke to last night.
“Are you okay, sir?”
“I think so…” I replied touching my forehead in agony. “Is my car outside?”
“Yes sir, it’s safe”
“Alright, thank you.”
Then, I immediately started walking.
Minutes later, I was in my car and prepared to leave. While driving, I couldn’t stop thinking about what really happened last night.
Moments later at a traffic signal, I took out my cell phone and saw a text message. It was from Nimra, the stock broker. She messaged me an address. I couldn’t concentrate on my task of investigating these frauds as I was very distracted by the horrible face of the creature from last night.
Some words from last night echoed around in my head:
“You’ll get ruined. Ruined enough to say that I have no reason to live”
“And if you try to escape, you will end up in hell”
“The source of your sins would be people around you”
Oh my God! What should I do now? I wondered.
There was no escape and the challenge was not something simple or easy. I had to do something but there was no clue about the person I met yesterday.

Later that day, I was sitting at a restaurant, where an ATM was close by. I was on a task but my mind was totally distracted. I just couldn’t stop thinking about last night.
A couple of minutes later, a woman in blue clothes came by and asked, “Are you Mr Rizwan?”
“Yes,” I said looking at her, “have a seat.”
She sat right in front of me and kept a pamphlet on the table.
“Here you will have all the details of our stages, their investments and their risks. You can contribute now if you want or in other case our other team members can come and collect your investment from your residential area.”
I read the pamphlet and after reading the details of first stage investment, I asked, “So fifty thousand is enough for first stage?”
“Yes, it is.”
“And how soon should I expect my return?” I asked.
“One week,” she replied.
I stood up and went towards the ATM. A minute later, I was holding cash worth Rs. 50,000 and sat where I was sitting before.
“Here’s the Rs. 50,000,” I said handing over the money to her.
“Okay,” she said and stood up.
“Anything you want to ask?” she confirmed with me before leaving.
“No, I trust you.”
She smiled and left. I took out my cell phone and made a call to the police constable who was standing outside.
“Yes, sir?” he answered my call.
“A woman in blue clothes is coming out,” I tell him. “it’s her, go and follow her,” I instructed him.
“On my way, sir.”
“Don’t lose her sight. Follow her till her home and note down all the details of her car,”
“Got it.”
I disconnected the call and now my mind was working on the task but the event from last night had left a long-lasting influence on me.

The following day was a disaster… an unexpected disaster. As I entered inside my police station, I saw Rafiq standing with a lawyer. He had a smirk on his face, as he was trying to tease me. I went closer to him and asked the police head constable, “What is this?”
“He has been bailed. We can’t do anything now, sir.”
I looked at Rafiq angrily and saw him smiling. Before leaving the police station, he said, “The worst is yet to come.”
I got a little confused. However, he left the police station in an arrogant way. I got really furious and yelled at the police head constable, “It’s your
fault! That murderer is walking out
free just because you didn’t follow
my instructions.”
“I’m sorry.” he said looking down at my feet.
I furiously pushed a chair and walked around to let go off my anger. The police head constable came and told me, “Sir, there’s a bad news for you.”
“What are you talking about?” I asked him.
“This was posted here today.” he handed over a paper to me.
“What is it?” I said taking it from him but not reading it.
“It’s your…” he said reluctantly. “Your… your termination letters.”

The Four Sins
I was so shocked that the paper fell from my hands.
“I’m sorry but it is that.” he said moving backwards.
I got so upset and stood silent, as I had realised at once that it was Rafiq’s act. I picked up the paper and read it. I was so upset that it’s indescribable. Should I be angry on my team who allowed that criminal to make a phone call? Or should I claim myself to be responsible for my deeds. I don’t know. I was just following the law. I did what I thought was right. But I had to pay for my actions.
Spending not another moment in that police station, I walked out of my workplace seeing it for the last time.

That evening, I was at home and my father was really worried about what had happened. We were helpless and couldn’t do anything as this was an order from a higher authority. I was planning to sue them but after some time.
In the meantime, I called over Aisha so I could talk to her for a while. While we were seated in my guest room, she suggested, “You should definitely file a case, Rizwan.”
“I don’t know… I think I’m not too stable right now.”
“Not stable?”
“You know what happened days back? I met the same old creature that claimed to be my sins.”
“You mean you actually met that thing?”
“Yes,” I answered, “and this time he revealed my fourth sin, vanity.”
“Interesting.”
“He also said that my sins would be found among people.”
“What were your other sins again?”
“Wrath, Greed and Envy.”
“Wrath, Greed, Envy and Pride.”
“Well, it was Vanity, not Pride.” I corrected her.
“No it’s not that. There’s something you should know. Few weeks back, I was studying the Bible and there it was mentioned something about seven deadly sins. So these four sins of yours are among those seven deadly sins.”
“I see. What are the other three sins?”
“…Gluttony” she recalled, “Sloth and Lust.”
“Oh… well, I don’t think that I have committed those but what I need to focus on now is my job and these supernatural events that are happening around me.”
“You should pray to God,” she suggested sincerely.
I stood up as I couldn’t answer her and said while changing the subject, “Okay, I’ll bring our supper.”
“Sure.”

It was a really bad week. I was stressed and anxious throughout. My job and my career were everything for me. If it weren’t for them I would have accomplished nothing. Now I had lost my job which meant that I had lost my self esteem.
But things were about to change, for the end of that week was surprisingly good. I received a call from Nimra the stock broker, who informed me that I could have my investment back along with 20 per cent profit. I was thrilled and surprised, so after the phone call, I decided to invest further and this time for the second stage.
So on the appointed day, I met Nimra and handed over Rs. 100,000 to her. This time there was slightly more risk but at the same time greater return on my investment.
Unexpectedly, my father suffered from a heart stroke and was in his room where I heard him yelling out for help. I rushed to see him and panicked, so I called the ambulance and asked them to come immediately.
The ambulance arrived on time. I went with them to the hospital and was really worried about my father. My mother also wanted to come but I didn’t allow her to come along, as she would have been worried the whole time.
That night my father was admitted to the hospital and according to the doctors, his condition was serious. I didn’t know why these things were happening with me. Maybe they were punishments of my sins. I had lost my job but I didn’t want to lose my father at any cost.
It was my third day at the hospital and I saw something strange once again. I was standing in the corridor and saw a woman walking. Some sort of blazing light was shining around her body. She was walking in a really strange manner. And quite like before, she was only visible to me. The nurses and visitors roaming around the corridor couldn’t see her. This woman had gone quite far and was hardly visible to me now. But I heard her saying, “I’m about to enter hell.”
I was really shaken and immediately left the spot and went straight to the room where my father was admitted.

One morning while I was at the hospital, I felt my cell phone vibrating. It was a call from Nimra. I answered the call, “Yes?”
“Mr Rizwan, congratulations. There’s a 40 per cent return on your investments. You can come and collect your amount any time you want.”
I was thrilled and delighted but didn’t let her feel that on call, so I said, “Alright… I’ll let you know when we can meet.”
I didn’t know how it was working but it was. I could earn a lot of money this way and become a millionaire in a month.
Few hours later, I was outside the hospital making a phone call but got distracted when I saw Jaffar walking past me. It was a coincidence.
“Hey,” I greeted him nicely, “what are you doing here?”
“I work around here…” he answered politely and asked, “What are you doing here?”
I didn’t want to answer so I changed the subject, “So how’s everything?”
“Well, I’m just enjoying life.”
“Really, how come?” I asked curiously.
“I got promoted last week.”
I have to admit it. I got really jealous that moment.
“Oh, I see,” I uttered.
“Yeah, I mean I’ve worked really hard in the past few months. I didn’t even go home for several days.”
