Q: Hi! I am 21 years old and have naturally curly hair. I have been straightening my hair for several years, ever since I was a teenager but since a year or so, I have noticed extreme changes on my hair. They are now extremely dry and thin, and have no shine or smoothness left. Please tell me if it is due to several years of straightening? Arifa
A:
Dear Arifa, hair straightening does damage hair and particularly more if you have been doing it since your teenage years. The process tends to break keratin bonds inside your hair. How you straighten your hair also plays a huge role, as it should be done leaving at least 2cm of hair from your scalp, as well as the chemicals involved to straighten them must not be damaging for your tresses. If the thinning and dryness seems difficult to fix, I advise you consult a dermatologist or get an effective hair treatment done.

Q: I am in my late thirties but I still get pimples on my face. The pimples are pretty huge, take time to heal and leave scars behind. My skin isn’t oily and I do not eat fast food. Please tell me what could be the reason for these recurring pimples? Rochelle
A:
Dear Rochelle, pimples usually end by mid twenties but for some they continue longer. In such cases, hormonal imbalance is to be blamed. Other symptoms could be excessive hair fall, excessive hair growth all over the body or menstrual irregularities. Best is to consult both, a dermatologist and an endocrinologist to get to the root cause of your problem.

Q: I am 19 years old and a college student. I have freckles all over my face, which I think are due to sunburn. Even though I use sunscreen, yet my skin isn’t protected enough. Please help! Munazzah
A:
Dear Munazzah, apply sun block at least 15-30 minutes before you leave your house and reapply after washing your face, sweating, rubbing or swimming. Considering your skin is sensitive, apply sunscreen also on rainy or cloudy days. Even home remedies like application of potato or papaya peels, milk or lemon juice can help, depending on the type of your skin, as these remedies help in reducing the dark spots, patches and freckles.
