CELEB ECO
HYPOCRITES
While the celebs are publicly riding the eco-bandwagon, behind the scenes it’s a different story.

They recycle, hug trees and wax lyrical about saving the planet, but when it comes to sacrificing the luxuries of their A-list lifestyles, some things are too good to offer up to the gods of eco-living.
Take Celine Dion, who was outted last week as one of the planet’s most wasteful celebs, when it was revealed that she consumes 29.5 million litres of water a year in her US home. Or ‘environmentalist’ Sting, who has seven homes and flies his 750-strong crew with him on tour, Debbie Levin, president of the Environmental Media Association that promotes eco-living in Hollywood reckons these celebs need to put their money where their mouth is: “If they’re claiming to be eco-giants, why wouldn’t we look into their lifestyles?”
With that in mind, we name and shame the biggest celeb hippy-crites on the planet...
FUELLING ANGER BRANGELINA
Brad, a vocal campaigner on building eco homes in New Orleans, guest-narrated a green documentary warning of the dangers of being environmentally ignorant.
“There’s a lot of problems in the world right now because of our dependency on oil,” warns the actor who uses 50,000 litres of fuel every time he flies his brood on a private jet from their home in France to the US. The eco-hypocrites also insist on flying their chopper around the French Riviera in a bid to escape the swarm of paps. In addition, every time, the A-list couple leave their house, they deploy a convoy of decoy gas-guzzling 4x4s, sending the confused paps stampeding in different directions through the countryside.
Outraged local Jean-Francois Roubaud blogs, “Rather than continuing to give us lessons in ecology, Angeline and Brad would be better to lead by example instead of taking a helicopter on a whim.”
PLANE CRAZY JOHN TRAVOLTA
On a promotional movie tour to the UK last year, plane enthusiast John - who owns five private planes - summoned his inner eco-warrior and urged, “Everyone can do their bit. [Global warming] is a very valid issue - we have to think about alternative methods of fuel.” When he flew himself back to the US, John was the only passenger on board his $4 million Boeing 707 which can accommodate 150 passengers.
FRUIT LOOP CHRIS MARTIN
Outspoken lefty Chris pays for mango trees to be planted in developing countries in a bid to soak up the extra carbon emitted by the band. But fellow musician Alison Goldfrapp landed the pseudo eco campaigner in it when she toured with them in the US.
“We supported Coldplay and Chris Martin used to fly home on his jet, go home, write songs then fly to the next gig. I thought, ‘What? Are you insane” ?’ By making just 10 of these return journeys a year, Chris is using 250 times his share of carbon. That’s a helluva lot of mango trees. The words ‘drop’ and ‘ocean’ spring to mind.
MATERIAL GIRL MADONNA
Madge - who headlined Live Earth last year and graced the cover of Vanity Fair magazine’s third annual green issue last month - has faced criticism in the past for her environmentally flawed share portfolio which includes more than $2 million invested in oil exploration. In her defence, a spokesman said she was ‘educating herself’ and ‘making changes’. Unfortunately, Madge still can’t seem to get her head around the eco benefits of public transport. She’s openly criticized the introduction of road taxes in the UK and still insists on traveling by private jet, putting her carbon footprint at an estimated 1,018 tonnes - 100 times the average.
ECO TOP DOG? LEO DICAPRIO
Leonardo- who serves on the board of directors of Global Green USA - drives a hybrid car, had solar panels put in his LA home, and has plans to build an eco-friendly Caribbean resort. So far, so environmentally conscious. So imagine our surprise to hear that Leo’s new ‘eco-friendly’ New York pad comes complete with a dog spa that uses water up in Dion-esque proportions. Leo also chose to fly by private jet to promote his eco documentary The 11th Hour. Pot. Kettle. Black.
