“Beauty lies in the eyes of beholder”.
But beauty lies in the eyes of the beheld too. And in this case, dark circles, bags under the eyes and puffy lids don’t do anything for one’s confidence.
A pair of eyes give vital clues about your state of mind and heart, or health for that matter. And no matter how well one is turned out, a pair of jaded eyes can put a blemish on one’s entire look.
So how do we keep our eyes looking fresh and sparkling like diamonds? Beauty experts give us pointers:
Puffy Eyes
You wake up and expect to see yourself as a beautiful siren who will steal everyone’s heart during the day. But it is a haggard lady with puffy eyes staring back at you from the mirror. Sounds familiar?
Lack of sleep, too much sleep, fluid retention, high blood pressure, fatigue, anaemia and allergy to cosmetics can lead to puffy, swollen eyes. In some cases, this predicament is hereditary.
Battling puffy eyes
To cure puffiness, one can apply ice cubes for instant relief. If you have access to imported products, depuffers are available overseas that also help, but we are yet to hear them. It can also be camouflaged with shimmer powder as it reflects light.”
Hot and cold compresses done alternately and refrigerated tea bags applied for 15-20 minutes reduce puffiness as well. Cucumber slices or grated potato packs also help by improving circulation and reducing the fluid collected under the eyes.”
Dark Circles
Dark circles are attributed to anaemia, low haemoglobin levels, lack of sleep, irritation around the eyes due to cosmetics, stress and sometimes also due to the use of contact lenses.
Bad sleep patterns, imbalanced hormones and hereditary can be blamed for dark circles. As kids, we should have been taught to always wipe the region around the eyes with a soft cloth or cotton wool.
1. Concealers are one’s best bet to hide dark circles.
2. Foundation, too provide respite. But every trace of makeup should be removed before sleeping.
3. Hats and sunglasses further prevent the damage.
4. Sun blocks win over sunscreens as they block out the UV rays completely.
5. Anaemia is another major cause of dark circles. Get your haemoglobin levels checked and take some medication to correct it, advice cosmetologists. Consult your eyes specialist to rule out any eye problem.
6. Eye exercises to relax eye muscles, ideal lighting while reading, and maintaining optimum distance while working on the computer go a long way to reducing the problem.
Restricting intake of salt and a balanced nutritious diet helps. Lay emphasis on fresh fruits and green leafy vegetables, as they are rich in iron and other minerals. And drink plenty of water and fresh juices to keep yourself hydrated throughout.
A paste of blanched almonds with rose petals also helps reduce dark circles.
Fine Lines
One has to accept fine lines as a part of the ageing process. But alarm bells should ring when they appear while you are still young. Usually dry skin is the culprit. One cannot erase the damage done, but one can work towards mitigating it.
1. Hydrating the skin by drinking lots of fluids and moisturising the eye area works wonders.
2. Sunglasses, hats and umbrellas protect the skin from harsh sunrays and prevent if from drying up further.
