Also called The Devil’s Bible due to a full-page illustration of the Devil, himself and the legends that swirl around the book, this is the largest known ancient manuscript, so big that it takes at least two people to lift and is made of more than 160 animal skins. It was written in the 13th century A.D., and currently resides in the National Library in Stockholm, Sweden on public display. The book is said to have been written by a monk in a single night after he made a deal with the devil, as he had been sentenced to death by being walled in alive. Strangely, the writing suggests that it was actually written in a short span of time, but experts believe it would take one at least five years of non-stop labour to finish the work, with some scholars believing it might have actually taken about 30 years. The book contains many small, bizarrely-placed-together texts, including on exorcism, magical formulas, and an illustration of the heavenly city.
