The pressures that have been bearing down the Pakistani film industry for a good 3 decades have eased considerably now as filmi people now have access to budgets that were only dreamt of a few years ago. Shoaib Mansoor took a bold step in the direction of new-age cinema in Pakistan and there have also been a few other films with foreign star casts – adding value to production and attraction for the viewers. This time, it is a Punjabi flick, the much hyped film Basanti by Pakistani filmsaaz, Altamash Butt.
Basanti has finally been completed in a very short period of time. Saima, the popular desi heroine plays the lead with Shaan and Shamyl Khan in commanding roles. Written for the screen by Khaakan Haider with music by Tahir Khan, Basanti is set to capture the hearts of the audience. The Punjabi movie portrays culture and its values, addressing social evils in our side of the world. The story revolves around a woman who raises her voice against tyranny. The soundtrack of Basanti has already been well received by the public.
Altamash Butt has said the film would help end the catastrophe faced by the cinema industry. He may very well be right there but there are still many hurdles to overcome in this marathon of creating popular films. Butt says, “Basanti is a revolution; Basanti is a scintillating, bubbling picture of love and innocence; Basanti is a voice - voice of a young woman who stands firm to her beliefs and braves every storm that hits her. Basanti is the story of a very average woman, one who is taken for granted. Basanti is a wall that stands solid against the gales of human wrongdoings.” Enough rhetoric, Butt sahib… let’s see the movie first and decide if it really is the masterpiece that Butt Sahib claims it to be.
