INTERVIEW
|||MAG||| July 12 - 18, 2008
WHY WE LOVE
AYESHA TOOR
by AYAZ MALIK

She walked in most unassumingly and asked me to make myself comfortable. I was led to her sitting room. Getting hold of Ayesha Toor for an interview had been a real challenge. Her schedule is always planned in advance and it is mostly a busy one. It took a few good calls and text messages to get her to finally sit down and talk about herself. Besides, this lady is not the like who loves to chat about herself without a pause – like many other showbiz ladies. Rather, this Capricorn would discuss general affairs and matters with you. She loves talking about her family and it can be assumed she’s the strong family type.

Her Style and Family
An educated, well brought up, sociable and seemingly easy going Ayesha, is in fact a very serious and strong willed

person. She generally exudes a determined and practical aura but that is not really her. It is a part of her. Her eyes give her away. She is extremely sensitive and a caring person blessed with maternal feelings. Ayesha hails from an educated and well read family. “I am the only one in my family who ventured in the field of showbiz and entertainment. The rest of my siblings are all on executive top notch jobs,” said Ayesha jovially. “My sister is a government officer in Islamabad, my brother works in Dubai; I’m the odd one out. I really love my family and they reciprocate. My dad was with the national carrier. He’s retired now. Because of his long service span with the national carrier my loyalty lies with that company and it’s my choice of carrier whenever I have to fly to any part of the world. Come on now, after all I have been travelling free on the same airline all my childhood and teenage years,” she says laughing on her favorite attire, “I love to wear shalwar kameez; unfortunately I don’t know how to put it together.”

On Acting
Before Ayesha met Sajid Hassan for Punterz and even before when she was part of a spoof of a Hollywood flick with Ahsan Rahim she had been to the USA. “I went to the USA to study but the place wasn’t all that great; I’d say it was quite monotonous, so I came back and joined St. Joseph’s College and later went to NCA Lahore. And then I landed at the English daily THE NEWS,” revealed Ayesha. No wonder, when you meet her she comes across as a person with a very broad outlook towards life and looks at things in a much wider perspective, hence the sensitivity and the warmth in her nature. “I love animals, especially dogs, though right now I have kittens all over my place but I would say I’m a dog person,” shared Ayesha cuddling a cat who was ready for a nap in her mistress’ lap. As the tea and kebabs were brought in, Ayesha’s attention was diverted immediately towards the kittens who were anxiously trying to get to the kebabs. Once the kittens were out of the room Ayesha resumed by telling that she took up the career basically for fun and money. “Who doesn’t want money now, you tell me…” and she laughed. Well said. It is a fact of life. But then this is how our AT is - the girl-next-door, with no hang-ups, friendly, yet, secretive. “All artists including myself I’d say are not normal, they’re mad. You cannot be normal in a profession where creativity and hard work are the order of the day.”
“Besides taking care of your looks, you have to be up and about involved in all the projects you are working on. It’s not easy and gets very demanding at the end of the day. I enjoy acting quite a bit and ideally I’d want to go to a performance arts school to get some formal training. The actors I have worked with so far like Rahat Kazmi, Bushra Ansari, Sajid Hasan were fantastic and whatever little I know about acting is by watching these people bring characters to life. I always say people are put into asylums for what actors get paid for…! Besides hosting shows I have also modelled for television commercials. To date, I have done three videos - two for Rushk and one for Ali Azmat; one telefilm for Misbah Khalid, one for Angeline Malik that I am very proud of; a soap with Jaleel Akhtar, presented and wrote six shows for various channels. The rest I don’t remember.”
Her Ideas

Ayesha Toor

“Things have changed in the last two years; for better or worse I don’t know. What I do know is that art and creativity end where money begins. An actor gets three or four times the amount a script writer does and it shows in the content of our programming. A good show requires a good, professional script rather than anything else. How many good writers have our industry produced in the last ten years and what did people like Noorul Hooda Shah and Anwar Maqsood do to encourage the younger lot? I have worked with the best people our industry has to offer and I wish that instead of artists having to hunt for quality work there were agencies to promote and find work for them. But sadly, there is absolutely no one in Pakistan who would do that. Ego’s, I feel, are bigger than talent here.”
There’s something about Ayesha… when people usually meet her they think she cannot speak Urdu, whereas she can and loves to “It is my identity” she says. “And I am also modern but modernism lies in your head, it’s a state of mind not how you dress up or how skimpy your clothes are that make you modern. “Its all in the head” says this undying optimist. She is not in favour of Pakistanis aping India to achieve success in any way. She demands respect and gets it too. Recently, she was hosting an interesting show called Inside IPL and she sure did a good job of it.

These Days
Ayesha is busy in a few ventures and since the past two years our lass has been considering devoting more time to her acting endeavours. And when she sets her mind on something she gets it done. But when you try to talk about her personal life, marriage and all, she shuts up like a clam and so we let it go at that.
She talks about work, work and more work and just that! “I’m not the kind of person who would speak volumes about my achievements; my work should speak for itself,” said the movie buff who loves to spend time watching the latest movies available. These days she is desperately trying to get hold of a boxing instructor so she can learn this art.
In the coming five years, “I’d be happy to be alive,” concluded the dusky beauty with a mysterious tattoo on her right arm the inscription of which she doesn’t reveal.
