Every thought of altering the look of your home without changing the furniture or knocking down the walls? The easy answer is colour. If you think bringing in an extra dash of colour in your home or changing the mood of your boudoir from sunny to sultry involves an expensive paint job and the ensuing headache, then think again. Home furnishings, in different shades and textures, can do the trick.
The Curtain Call
Furniture is usually fixed in most homes. The least expensive way to give a home a new look is to work on the furnishings. Curtains are the easiest to change and they usually set the mood of any room.
From giving your home a heavy, ornate feel to making it look airy and fresh, you can achieve it all simply by changing your curtains. If you have windows and doors that open up to a balcony with a great view, then a combination of sheer thicker curtains would do the trick. Sheer fabrics give the room an airy, open feel and alternating these with thicker fabrics ensures that you can always shut out the sunlight when it gets too harsh.
Fabrics for window panels need to be layered. A combination of heavy curtains in cotton or chennile and sheer curtains in voile is required to alternately allow the breeze but cut the sunlight on hot afternoons.
Go in for silk curtains if you want your room to have an ornate, decorative feel. People are even going in for polyester fabrics. It all eventually depends on what works best for your room.
Sofa So Good
If curtains are the best way to play with light and shade in the room, cushions are your fashion statement. You need to work with existing upholstery and find interesting contrasts or related shades to enhance the room without all the pieces looking like a collection of odds and ends. A sprinkling of cushions helps create a link between the sofa upholstery and the curtains. Selecting upholstery fabric for sofas and chairs can often be a tricky task. Jacquards, silks and chennile, because of the strength of material and the variety of designs available, are popular choices for sofa upholstery fabric. If you are extremely sure of the look you want for your room, printed jacquards are a great bet. If you aren’t sure, play it safe. Instead of patterns and prints, you can go for solids or unusual textures. This ensures that even if you add other accents to the room it doesn’t clash with your upholstered seating arrangements. Solid tones don’t have to be boring. Create a dramatic look with printed or striped cushions, throws and rugs.
Another great advantage of solid colour upholstery is that you can change the look of your sofa very often by simply changing the throws. Throws are traditionally a substitute for changing sofa upholstery. They can add a touch of flair and colour as soon as they are thrown over the back of a sofa. Keep in mind that furnishing fabrics used for upholstery need weight and durability.
Hot weather also determines that the fabric should breathe, ie, be porous or absorbent.
