Is your child not performing well in school? Do you get complaints from his teachers that he is inattentive, irritable, restless or even bad tempered? Well, maybe this is all because he is not eating his breakfast. A recent study conclusively demonstrates that children who eat a healthy breakfast perform far better in school than those who don’t. A nutritious breakfast accounts for one fourth of the required dietary allowance for key nutrients like proteins, vitamins and minerals and very rarely do kids make up for the missed essential nutritional intake if they skip breakfast. There are many physical as well as psychological repercussions to missing breakfast.
Physically, your child could have stomach or headaches, muscle fatigue or feel sleepy. Psychologically, he could have anxiety pangs, be nervous, fidgety, confused, indecisive, be apt to lie, pick up fights and be generally unhappy! Moreover, hungry or undernourished children are liable to be mentally lethargic, have problems in concentrating and are less creative, therefore, less inclined to applying logic or finding solutions while studying. On the other hand, children who eat breakfast, have better nutritional intake and balanced sugar levels, therefore more energy. They are more apt to be quicker in problem solving skills and make fewer errors. Plus, they have excellent attendance records, are more consistent in their performance and are more active in sports as well as creative activities.

Facts about ear pain
Ear pain in children is often caused by a build-up of fluid and pressure behind the eardrum, in the area called the middle ear. The middle ear is connected to the nasal passages by a short narrow tube, the Eustachian tube. The Eustachian tube allows normal fluids to drain out of the middle ear, and helps keep the pressure in your ear equalised.
A cold or allergy can block the Eustachian tube due to inflammation and the build-up of secretions. This is especially likely in small children, because their Eustachian tube is shorter and more horizontal. When the Eustachian tube closes, the normal flow of fluid from the middle ear is prevented. The fluid begins to accumulate, which can cause stuffiness, pain, hearing loss, and an ear infection.
The symptoms of an ear infection may include fever, ear pain, fussiness, increasing crying, and irritability. Many children will have temporary and minor hearing loss during and right after an ear infection.
Ear pain in a child or infant is not always from infection, however. Other causes include water from bathing, soap, or shampoo retention. Or ear canal irritation from cotton-tipped swabs. Call your child’s doctor if the child’s symptoms (pain, fever, or irritability) do not improve within 24 to 48 hours.
