We are a nation that is always in and out of love. We are the same people who enthusiastically chant pro “a certain politician” slogans one day and, a few months later, we are chanting anti “the same politician” slogans. It is our national psyche. How dearly we wanted democracy to come and save us from the dictates of dictatorship - and how dearly we embraced it. Now with as much zeal, we are expressing our dissatisfaction of the same. But then this is us. This is who we are.
A re-evaluation of the current situation will have to take into account various events. Our tribal areas that are currently affected by Talibanisation are no longer the far flung areas which would not affect the rest of the country. From these far flung areas, the points of view are spreading fast and creeping into the mainstream cities. This stands in the way of a moderate state that can tackle foreign pressures, not to mention our everready, anxious neighbour,

The retailers are raising the prices because the manufacturer won’t settle for less” says Noman a pharmacist and continues “chalta hai bhai, loag khareedtae hain, dus nahi laen gae tu aik lae laen gae

India. Remember, the created force is no longer the Mujahideen. They are the Taliban or Al Qaeda. That does not suit Big Brother, although, Big Brother is to blame for the entire transformation. Or maybe it does suit Big Brother... coming from another perspective.
As if this was not enough the escalating economic crisis faced by the government and the people is finally taking its toll. Commodities have started vanishing from the market only to reappear with a higher price tag. “The retailers are raising prices because the manufacturer wonít settle for less,” says Noman, a pharmacist, and continues, “Chalta hai bhai, loag khareedtae hain. Dus nahin laen gae tu aik lae laen gae.” Another departmental store owner admits to selling commodities at whatever rates the companies demand them to. “We cannot help it,” he says. “People want to buy the things even if they are expensive. Apparently people have a lot of money to spend. So why is the media cribbing over the price hike? This is Defence. People can afford what they want,” he ends his comment abruptly, serving a well-fed and well-heeled lady at the counter. So much for the common man’s comments. But then again, it is an insight into the present day mindset of the people. Nowhere does it seem that the meek are inheriting anything

Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani addressed the nation on 19th July instead of some fruitful outcome the fuel prices went sky rocketing and are still having their after effects to date

but some wrath, and not the earth.
Talking about the meek, the poor souls are crushed so badly that they have stopped buying certain commodities off the shelf altogether. Daal kebabs in the poor man’s home are in vogue again. The most popular being the channa daal.
Cut - to security issues and not even the Bilawal House staff is secure. Sure, many of you know of the assassination of the Chief Security Officer of the ex-prime minister’s house. Talk about security! The government though, if at all meaning well, may hardly be able to do anything on these fronts because this is not a singular issue. This is a chain effect linked by and through many - many miles outside Pakistan with well-forged links in other countries.
We will go on facing these issues due to the fact that the two ruling parties do not seem to agree on several matters that need cohesion and not friction which exists between our rulers at the moment. For the time being, we ought to forget the differences and work on a collective agenda to strengthen the nation - the nation which is aimlessly moving in no specific direction. An example being Prime Minister Yusuf Raza Gilani’s address to the nation on July 19. Instead of some fruitful outcome from the talk, fuel prices went sky-rocketing, and we are still reeling from its after-effects to date.
Every day a new strike hits the common man. People had great expectations from the government that is ruling but sadly the rift between the leading parties and their tantrums are not leading the people out of the dire situation that they are in. It is a state of callousness and greed that will not go till it sucks dry the people, if the right policies are not implemented soon. People blame the government. It is the government who stands responsible.
Pakistan is placed very strategically on the world map. Many countries with many interests have well-planned strategies to use Pakistan as a convenient ally, by-pass when required, go through when convenient, and the best is blame when they want to. For instance, even with Iran test firing its super missiles, Pakistan was featured on the cover of an opinion making magazine published from the USA. Although at that time, the supposedly major threat to the USA or the world was Iran, according to various reports, a street shot focusing on the public of OUR nation was published, with a hard hitting caption reading that Pakistan was the real threat. This goes to prove many things and the way they work, the minds and policies of the countries with vested interest in our country and their implementation strategy. Even the western media is no longer supporting this Roman Empire patronising plan of the US policy. And the UN takes no notice. Why should they? Mr. Bush happily, without a care in the world, is given to rhetoric and tries mixing with people for good press. Even the American nation wants out of this power domination strife.
It comes back to our local wrecked scenario where people for the first time have been actually left to their own devices - whether they work or not is again the publics headache. Soon our independence day will be celebrated with great verve and zeal and once again we will chant slogans of Pakistan Zindabaad. We will always chant this and we will always remain the loyal citizens of this country as long as there is one sincere citizen left amongst us. And we will continue loving this country. All we require is a little self analysis and concern for others. Meaning simply, caring for each other on a collective and individual level. It is not at all difficult. It is achievable. Other nations have done it. We too can do it. We are, after all, a nation which is in and out of love. Staying with this one emotion (read mindset) is the key to our unity, which is direly needed today.n
