It’s time to celebrate once again! Why not go for a festive home makeover.
Party season is round the corner with Bari Eid, Christmas and New Year coming up. While preparing to throw parties this time, do not neglect your home. In fact, surprise your guests by giving your humble abode a snazzy makeover. Make sure your interiors showcase the spirit of celebration as well and in this regard simple improvisations could do wonders.
Adding a splash of colour on one side of the wall is an instant makeover tactic. It does the trick as the room looks different and new. Turning things around at home like changing the furniture, breaking the monotony of the often-used sofa will also give your room a new chic look. Here are a few tips to make your abode warm, alluring and vibrant.
Cover up!
Veil those boring sofa covers! Use loose covers, colourful throws - old zari saris, over the back of your sofa. Make sure that you choose and coordinate contrasting colours rather than sticking to one colour. This will definitely give the room a dash of grandeur.
Drape them on
Dreary curtains are strict no-no. Dig your traditional wardrobe and pull out those saris and dupattas. They are an excellent choice as they have a very ethnic feel to them. You can even use a Banarasi sari for this purpose. Avoid using velvets as they are outdated. Muslins are also a good pick, but make sure you opt for vivid colours. You can attach mirror-like sequins onto georgette dupattas and even in muslins, to add to the celebratory look.
Cool Cushions
Bring out those lehengas or shalwar kameezes you wish to discard. Make amazing cushion or pillow covers with them. Your best bet, of course, are the ones with mirror work or zardozi embroidery on them. If you have bedspreads with embroidery or mirror work, stop thinking of saving them for another day, for tomorrow never comes! Use them to brighten your living spaces. Chikan dupattas can be used to make lampshades, to brighten up the whole festive look.
Some Unique Quickies
· Give your old chair a makeover. Just decoupage - it’s the creative art of assembling, pasting and varnishing paper cut-outs for decorating objects. The result is mind-boggling!
· If you have a kilim (a tapestry-woven Turkish rug with geometric designs in rich, brilliant colours), wash it and put it over an antique ottoman. See the effects yourself.
· Cast off your old wall frames and use the ones that are in sync with the portrait or painting. Matching frames give a sense of continuity to the picture.
· Use a bright coloured table spread for your dining table. Use silver cutlery or even the earthen one and replace napkin holder with a dazzling bangle.
· The beauty of candles and diyas will do the rest!
