MOTHER'S DAY SPECIAL

ALL THINGS MATERNAL by Ayaz Malik

My mother, my divine gift from GOD
She protects me so
like the peas are protected by the pod.

You are a girl. You are a daughter. You love to try on your mother's sandals, her dupatta, her kurta. She scolds you when you try smearing her lip colour all over your face. You love your mother - for no given reason - you want to be just like her -- just like. Your mother holds your small delicate unguided fingers in her hands - ever so protective. She loads you with kisses and hugs. She adores you abundantly without asking for anything in return. She sings for you. She sings lullaby when you cannot sleep. Hers is the only lap you will remember till the end.
Then you get married. You become a mother. Everything develops into a unique and completely different perspective; a perspective of responsibility with maternal waterfalls cascading out your soul. You can never bear the idea of any harm coming to your child. Even the idea scares you. You give all your love to your child selflessly. You want everything for your child... the best of everything. And there are dreams you dream of when your little angel will grow up. So did your mother, most selflessly, devoting herself to you and trying to fulfill your endless needs and wants. She could not bear the heartache of a tear rolling down your cheek. She kissed it off for you. Till now you never knew what your mother really was. Give her something back of what all she gave you. It is a natural cycle being repeated. But this distinctive and most divine cycle is the loveliest of all cycles that you will ever come across in your life. For your child, your lap will be the one to remember till the end.
Cherish Motherhood- Celebrate it! It's her day!
"To me, motherhood is the most sacred bond created by God. It actually defines a woman. When a woman becomes a mother, she gets closer to God, as she is a nurturer and the source of new life in the world. Motherhood became my spiritual best when I was pregnant and had my child. Mother's Day is just one day we officially get to thank our mothers for being so selfless for us. It is not about gifts and shopping. It is the moment when we should step back and realise the immense love that mothers have for their kids. Birth is an attribute of God that he has only given part of to a mother," says Maria Bilal popularly known as Maria B, a mother, a wife, a fashion designer, a daughter and a mother. Maria is right in her perception, for Mother's Day not only marks a significant moment of the year that has been a tradition since ages but also a time to think and understand, realise and respect all the love our mothers have for us.
Today's working mother has a lot to consider and it is not just as simple as managing to spend time - quality time - with her kids. It is by scheduling and proper time management and thoughtfulness that she takes maximum time out to spend with her children thus strengthening her bond with her kids. Nadia Hussain, model and mother who is rearing her children with all the love and attention she can, despite her busy schedule comments, "Mother's Day is a great day to actually make your mom feel very special but as a mother myself I feel that every day goes by with us taking our moms for granted which is something that we should definitely consider more often and instead of just one day we should make every day Mother’s Day.” Nadia strongly suggests, "Go out and get the best present you can think of, for your mom and also book her a massage appointment and then later take her to a wonderful dinner and don't give her any stress because that's what she needs for at least today".
Mahreen Kashiff, producer and anchor stands in concurrence with Nadia saying, "Being a mother of a 4 year-old daughter leaves me with huge responsibility. I realised the importance of Mother's Day when I myself became a mother and since then, I particularly try to make my mother feel special on this day."
Tasneem Adnan a marketeer starts by quoting Lincoln ‘All that I am, or hope to be, I owe to my angel mother. - Lincoln' she further adds commenting with an insight based perception: "A mother's love is inseparable just as much as it is incomparable. A selfless bond from the time we take our very first breath. Love such as this deserves to be celebrated every day!
Mother's Day is celebrated on the second Sunday of May. This day gives us a wonderful opportunity to rejoice our most cherished blessing and honour the one most Special person in our lives. On Mother's Day moms are the guests of honour. They are lavished with special gestures like presents, cards, cakes or flowers from their families, friends and loved ones. Small children write letters in school or make cards and crafts to take home. Husbands cook and clean and look after the family, allowing the mother to relax and enjoy the day.
Such small gestures of affection do not equate the devotion and sacrifices that make a mother, but they help to renew bonds and help us show our moms that we know how much you care."
On asking some more ladies about what their perception was of Mother's Day we got a very healthy response from some well known names in Pakistan. Nadya Mistry, fashion designer says, "Like any anniversary or special occasion it's a day to stop, think and express your love to your mom. You should show her how much she means to you. But irrespective of whether you say it to her all the time or not, you should definitely let her know how much you love her."
Angie Marshal stylist and grooming expert comments, "Everyday is Mother's Day. It's a day when mothers should be left without stress and everyday worries be put to rest... it’s a day for the mother to relax and have fun. It should truly be Mother's Day and they should do exactly as they please. On a serious note it's a beautiful day and you should let your mother know how much you love her."
Angeline Malik, director/actor sums it up in a simple fashion saying, "I love my mom and she knows it; whenever I meet her and depart from her I hold her tight but on Mother's Day I hold her longer and tighter... that's what it means to me."
Nazia Malik, host/model enthusiastically speaks on this occasion in detail, commenting on aspects which are food for thought where Mother's Day is concerned. Nazia is of the view that, "Mother's day is the day of true love and affection. At least on this day we get to show the love for not only ones mother but all the mothers in the entire world. And if there is something that we can do to contribute to making lives better for mothers all over the world we should definitely do something for them. Especially those mothers deserve to be considered the most on this day who have lost their children or on the other hand their children have sent them away to old age homes.
I must say to all those stone hearted people to wake up now and care for your mother. They don't know what they are losing out on. Time never comes back. And guilt can play havoc with a person’s mind. So this is the time to realise it. I love my ammi the most in the entire world. I always would want her to be beside me. I wouldn't be anything without her and this is a fact. She is the strength and energy of my life. I want to do a lot for her not just on mother's day but all year round, better still all my life. I wish all the mothers of the world a very happy Mother's Day. We should never forget the truth that whatever most of us are, we are because of our parents and if they have contributed so much to our well being then its time for us to take a little step and make them feel that we appreciate and try and never hurt our mothers or fathers for that matter. After all, if it weren't for the fathers, Mother's Day would be a little difficult to celebrate."
A Short History of Mother’s Day
Mother's have been revered as gods since the beginning of time or rather motherhood itself has a very special place in the minds and lives of everyone. In almost all of world's nations and religions the same has been believed and all have in some manner or the other have paid tribute to mothers. A strong reason would be that motherhood means birth and birth is most significant to mankind. Being a mother signifies the source of new life.
Having its roots somewhere in the olden traditions of the Greeks Mother’s Day was further taken to be practiced by Romans paying homage to their mother god. It was not just the Romans who were paying homage to the mother but also the people of other regions like the South Asia. Later, the day was religiously celebrated as Mothering Sunday, in the British Isles of the yore but as time passed it evolved into Mother's Day.
Americans were the first to take this occasion on a grand scale both in celebration and marketing aspects. From America the trend spread all over the world and today almost every country celebrates Mother's Day in their own fashion, garnished with their culture and traditions. Thus, we make our moms cakes, scrapbooks, do the house chores ourselves and make mother rest throughout the day.
