1. Arshad Khan
A regular Chai Wala, tea seller, rose to instant fame overnight all because of one picture. A Pakistani photographer, Javeria Ali photographed Arshad Khan pouring tea at Islamabad's Sunday Bazaar. As soon as she posted the picture on her account, the world was swooning over this tea seller’s piercing blue eyes and enchanting features. Days later, Khan shot his first modelling campaign. He has now featured in a music video, walked the ramp for a famous fashion designer and has bagged an acting role in an upcoming movie. He has also made it to the list of “50 Sexiest Asian Men” released by Eastern Eye, a London-based publication.
2. Huma Mobin
She is the woman who made headlines all over the world for going to her honeymoon alone. Yes, this is true. Huma Mobin who is married to Arsalan Sever had to go to Greece for her honeymoon-cum-family-trip without her husband, after he was refused a visa. She decided to carry on with the plan, as the trip was paid for in advance. Accompanied by her in-laws, Mobin had her pictures taken in every location with a sad face and her arm out to indicate her missing husband. Her pictures soon took over social media and people couldn’t help but appreciate Mobin’s creativity and sense of humour.
3. Taher Shah
Mankind’s Angel Taher Shah once again caused a social media frenzy, as he unleashed his new single Angel onto the world earlier this year. He became an internet sensation with his last song Eye to Eye not only in Pakistan but also in India. However, his latest song got him world recognition. This Angel with long tresses, wings and a wand soon became the target of internet trolls. Soon after the release of the song, memes, tweets and GIFs started pouring in. While some made fun of his angelic attire and singing skills, others praised him for the lyrics of the song.
Be it their performance or controversies surrounding them – our cricket team has always managed to be in news. This year the team made it to the headlines all over the world for their celebratory push-ups. After defeating England by 75 runs in the first of the four test series, the team performed several push-ups in front of the Lord’s Pavilion followed by a military salute. It was a gesture of appreciation for their pre-tour military boot camp. Misbah-ul-Haq did the same when he hit a century in the first innings of the match.
5. Jeena (Aisha Khan)
Popular TV serial Man Mayal ruled the social media for the entire duration of the drama. Fans and haters would take to social media to praise or disparage the show with every episode. However, Jeena, played by Aisha Khan, was not only the most talked about character but also the target of most internet trolls. The character is that of an obsessive girl who can do anything to get the love of her life. Absorbed in self-pity, Jeena complains about all the things she doesn’t have in life and being an orphan, her favourite dialogue is “Mere to maa baap bhi nahi hain.” While Aisha Khan was praised for her acting in the drama, her character became a prey to numerous internet memes.
6. Shafaat Ali
Yet another social media sensation, Shafaat Ali is a comedian who became famous for impersonating Pakistani political leaders in his viral videos. In his parody videos, the Peshawar borne artist imitates the signature style of politicians like Bilawal Bhutto Zardari, Imran Khan, Shahbaz Sharif and Altaf Hussain; making speeches that made headlines. His videos are still being shared on different social media platforms and the artist has garnered a huge fan following.
7. Shumaila Bhatti
Also known as the desi bomb shell, Shumaila Bhatti voices the concerns of desi girls hailing, especially, from the middle class. Hidden behind the guise of a Snapchat filter, Muhammad Moiz dons the character of Shumaila Bhatti and highlights the problems of young desi women in a humorous way. He has also played the characters of a desi babe, an ‘elitist protected politically correct Yankee’ and a typical desperate dude. However, he became famous for his Shumaila-Bhatti avatar.
8. Momina Mustehsan
The New York based Pakistani singer and songwriter, Momina Mustehsan rose to fame after she made her Coke Studio debut this year. The singer made and uploaded amateur renditions of some Bollywood songs, due to which she was approached to sing Awari for the film Ek Villain. However, she became the talk of the town after she sang Afreen Afreen along with Rahat Fateh Ali Khan. People couldn’t help but sing her praises not only for her enchanting voice but also for the beauty she is. Since then, Mustehsan has been in the news. She is also held responsible for breaking many hearts when she announced her engagement with Ali Naqvi, earlier this year.
9. Ahsan Khan
Apart from being a prominent leading man in the Pakistani entertainment industry, Ahsan Khan is also known for his empathetic and humanitarian side. The actor posted a video of a homeless old man who was looking for a job. The video made rounds on the social media and an IT firm soon offered the old man a job and accommodation.
10. Anush & Munib
Anush Ammar, daughter of a Pakistan People’s Party senator wed Munib Altaf in what is known as the longest and most expensive Pakistani wedding. Multiple functions, designer dresses, yacht party, and a lot of glitz and glamour was involved in this extravaganza. Social media was bombarded with pictures from the ceremonies. While some fans were in a state of awe, others simply criticised the pomp and show.
