ASK A DIETITIAN

Is it good to have mushrooms when I have a cholesterol level of about 254? I would be very obliged if you could kindly advise me on that. I am on a very strict diet now. My initial cholesterol was about 268 and I have been able to lower it to 254. Please advice.

Yes! You don't have to skip mushrooms if your cholesterol is high. What you should be worrying about is your inactive lifestyle and junk food intake.

What tips food wise or otherwise for lowering high blood pressure might you have?

Follow DASH diet. Lower your salt intake. Increase your vegetable and fruit intake. Quit salty foods. Go for a walk daily.

My sister just found out she needs to get hysterectomy done. Her doctor put her on a diet of clear liquids last week and she needs to remain on that for a couple more weeks. My concern is that she will not get all of her nutrients. Plus, I know she is sick of broth. What else can she have?

If her doctor has advised it, then I'm sure she must be getting all the required nutrients but in liquid form. So, don't worry about that.

My mom has hypothyroidism and my sister has hyperthyroidism. So, it runs in the family. I have a few symptoms indicating that I might develop one of these in the future. Is there a way to prevent either of them by means of diet?

Make sure your diet isn't deficient in nutrients. And try not to put any extra weight. Stay active and eat healthy. Then you're good to go.

I am 19 years old (turning 20 in December) and I weight more than I should. I am quite concerned about my weight and would like some advice on how to lose weight if possible. I am starting my university in two weeks. I am happy to try out anything which will work.

1. Follow a calorie deficit diet.

2. Stay hydrated.

3. Exercise 3-5 days a week.

5. Sleep on time.

6. Don't fall for fad diets. •
