The largest World War II bomb to ever be discovered in Poland was captured on video exploding as navy divers attempted to diffuse it. The scary incident occurred underwater near the Piast Canal outside the town of Swinoujscie, Poland. Navy divers had located the Tallboy bomb – which was dropped in 1945 by Great Britain's Royal Air Force (RAF) during an attack on the German cruiser Lutzow – and were trying to diffuse the 5,400 kg (about 11,904 lbs.) explosive. Things went wrong when the bomb detonated under the surface of the water, resulting in a massive explosion that sent water flying into the air and reaching the surrounding shoreline, as seen in the video. EuroNews also reported that the bomb was strong enough to potentially cause a small earthquake. More than 750 people were evacuated from the area in the wake of the explosion. Despite the evacuations and the fact that Swinoujscie has a liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal, a spokesman for Swinoujscie's mayor confirmed to the PAP that nobody was hurt and none of their infrastructures suffered damage. Although, it was unclear to experts as to why the bomb never detonated in 1945.
