Due to the stay-at-home and social distancing orders around the world, you can't call up your salon to make an appointment when your hair colour is starting to fade. It's not the worst thing in the world, but it's not an ideal situation. Then again, neither is living through a pandemic.

Fortunately, there are ways to maintain your usual beauty rituals through this new normal: You can trim your hair at home or touch-up your own dye job. But for those who prefer to leave well enough alone and work with what they've got, there are options.

Colouring your own hair is one of the most daunting tasks that people are attempting at home, but if you'd rather leave such an undertaking to the professionals, we've got a plan for that. We have compiled ways on exactly how to preserve your hair colour when you're stuck inside and don't have access to a salon. Follow these simple tips, and you should be able to hold out just a bit longer.

Get glossy

Sometimes all that’s needed is a bit of hair trickery. Hair glosses can help give the illusion of a salon-fresh colour treatment without adding any new colour. A shiny finish helps lift hair colour, while making hair look and feel like it’s had the blow dry treatment.

Try semi-permanent colours

Semi-permanent colour is just that – semi-permanent – which allows you to experiment with different hues or simply use it as a buffer in between appointments, without having to commit. For those looking to cover up grey roots, Wella’s semi-permanent Colour Fresh covers up to 30 per cent of them and the colour only lasts up to six washes, so you can afford to be a little experimental with the different shades available.

Use root touch-up kits

At-home root touch-up kits are the perfect buffer between your regular colour appointments. They’ll gently and seamlessly cover any grey regrowth, blending into your hair to make waiting for your next appointment infinitely easier. They stay put during the day but wash out when you shampoo. There are also plenty to choose from, so finding the right colour match won’t be a problem.

Rinse with colour protecting shampoos and conditioners

Colour protecting and lifting shampoos and conditioners are worth investing in to protect your professional colour – once you’ve spent time and money on a great colour appointment at your hair salon, why not do everything you can to make it last?

Go for permanent colours

There is the option of permanent hair colour from a box. The results obviously last longer, but remember it’s important to choose the right colour – otherwise you might find yourself even more desperate to get into the salon to fix it.

Stop heat styling

When quarantine boredom strikes, you may be tempted to pick up a hot tool to curl your hair for the 'gram, but you should lay off for a bit.

Heat-styling can fade colour, so if you're going to use them, turn the temp down. But if you must curl your hair, trying doing so without heat. Sock-curls is a great way to mimic the texture you would get with a curling iron, or you can try using flexi-rods or pin curls as an alternate option.

Skip wash day

We suggest going a few days between washes. Skipping wash days allows the colour to sit in your hair longer; washing tends to strip it away.

Instead of washing your hair as often as you typically do, try using dry shampoo or texturising spray on the days you need to freshen up.

However, if you can't stand the grease and need to wash, we recommend the DpHUE Apple Cider Vinegar Hair Rinse to cleanse your scalp before you condition. This will help remove excess buildup without stripping your hair of its natural oils.
