Sony announces the new Next-Gen VR headset for PS5

TECH NEWS

Sony is working on a next-generation VR headset for the PS5. The headset won’t launch this year, but Sony is announcing early plans to make it available on the PS5 at some point in the future. Sony’s new VR headset will include an improved field of view, resolution, and even a single cord to make it easier to use. “We’re taking what we’ve learned since launching PS VR on PS4 to develop a next-gen VR system that enhances everything from resolution and field of view to tracking and input,” says Hideaki Nishino, Sony’s head of PlayStation platform and planning. Sony is also working on a new VR controller, which will use some of the features found in the DualSense PS5 controller. The company isn’t detailing the full specs or release dates yet. Sony’s original PlayStation VR headset debuted more than four years ago, and you need a special camera adapter to use it on the PS5. With a next-generation headset now in the works, we’ll soon find out what Sony has planned to improve the future of VR.

LG to start licensing webOS platform to other TV manufacturers

LG announced that the company’s webOS smart TV platform will soon be found on TVs from other brands. RCA, Ayonz, and Konka are some of the companies that have already signed on. “This has the potential to reshape the TV business for both technology and content providers while significantly growing LG’s presence and prominence in the global home entertainment market,” LG said in a press release. The news comes after LG revealed a significantly overhauled version of webOS at CES in January. On LG’s 2021 TVs, the slide-up “blades” interface has been ditched entirely in favour of a more traditional scrolling home screen. LG tells that the “powered by webOS TV” platform is based on webOS 5.0. So it’ll look just the same as LG TVs from several years. In licensing its platform to other TV brands, LG is following in the footsteps of Roku and Amazon, each of which has joined with third parties to release Roku TVs and Fire TV Edition TVs. The company will have control over the TV software experience across more devices and also take in more advertising revenue. This approach also gives LG more user data to make improvements to webOS, which will in turn benefit the company’s TV lineup.
