A few years ago, Netflix made a deal with author Harlan Coben to adapt a number of his novels. The Innocent is the latest Coben adaptation; it takes the action from the U.S. to Spain, losing none of the story elements that made the novel a hit 16 years ago. When Mateo Vidal (Mario Casas) was in law school, he went with his brother Isma (Jordi Coll) to a club. As he’s talking to a girl named Eva (Ariadna Carbol) at the club, one of her friends, Hugo (Alejandro Albarracín), gets jealous and picks a fight with Isma, which they take outside. Mat gets sucked into the melee, and in the process accidentally kills a man named Daniel (Eudald Font) when he pushes him down on some rocks. Mat gets four years for negligent homicide and overcomes the difficulties of prison life. He goes on leave when his parents die suddenly; he meets a woman named Olivia Costa (Aura Garrido); they hit it off but have to wait till he finishes out his sentence. He rebuilds his life after his release, though; Isma gives him a job at his law firm. Olivia comes back into his life and they get married. Isma dies suddenly, leaving Mat the firm. After they find out they’re going to be parents, Mat and Olivia look for a house in Mat’s old neighbourhood. Olivia gets a call that she has to go to Berlin for work; he’s distracted by the fact that Eva and Hugo live across from the house they like.
