ASK A NUTRITIONIST

Which is the best cooking oil? I’ve been cooking with refined oil for several years now.

If there is one thing you can do for your family to make them healthier, that is to stop cooking in olive, canola or any vegetable oils. Organic ghee, butter or coconut oil are by far the best oils that should be used for cooking. Olive oil, while good, should only be used over salads. Most of the vegetable oil sources are genetically modified. So, what you finally get in a can is cheap, highly refined oil that adds no nutritional value to your meals. Since it is far easier to squeeze oil from coconut meat because it already contains a lot of it, the manufacturing process is not harsh and you get an anti-inflammatory variety of oil that helps your body. Since the outer layer of every cell in your body is made of fat, it is important that you choose the right type of fat to build that wall. When it is built from sources like vegetable oils, it functions poorly. But when it is made from sources like coconut oil, it builds better receptors for insulin and functions optimally.

PCOS is making my skin break out and is making me gain weight. I am taking glucophage but it’s not helping. Please help.

The first line of action for any lifestyle disorder, including polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) should be diet and exercise. Glucophage should be taken only if symptoms do not improve after you have exhausted other natural options. PCOS could be due to one or a combination of the following: You have high fasting insulin levels, your hormone levels are disrupted or you have gut inflammation. There are chances that your scans will be completely clear but you still have symptoms such as hirsutism, have stubborn fat or irregular periods, all signs of PCOS. There are many ways you can solve this with food but one of the biggest solutions is a high-fat diet that helps your body respond better to insulin, heals your gut and helps in resetting your hormones. Your steroid hormones are made from fat. So, a high-fat diet will dramatically help with any kind of PCOS. Start your day with fat, load up on avocados, nuts and coconut meat and cook your green vegetables in ghee. These food habits can help reverse PCOS and achieve hormonal well-being.
