High on ratings, dramas that left a legacy behind

Movie studios had to shelve nearly all their would-be 2020 blockbusters when the pandemic hit, but their partners in the television industry had plenty of product in the pipeline in 2020, ready to deliver to a captive audience of people stuck at home and looking for escapism.

The result was a TV year like no other, filled with offbeat experiments and surprise hits. The dramas below represent the wide range of what television had to offer in 2020. Here’s a rundown of what fared from MAG, read on…

Fitrat

The con artists of film and television are as intelligent as they are wily. With one smooth sleight of hand, they can take you for all you’re worth with a smile on their face and we kind of love them for that because well, we aren’t the ones suffering the repercussions. One of our favourite con artist of 2020 is Fariya from Geo Entertainment’s ongoing drama serial Fitrat, played by Saboor Aly. Fitrat revolves around a young girl Fariya who hails from a lower middle class family and aspires to achieve her dreams and goals by defrauding men. The story must not be too out of the box but Saboor has managed to marvel the audience with her performance.

Pyar ke Sadqay

There's nothing we love as much as a good underdog story. After all, chances are we were all misfits once, and there's something so heartwarming and reassuring about watching two people who don't quite fit in for some reason fall in love and prove the naysayers wrong. Pyar Ke Sadqay is the story of Abdullah (Bilal Abbas) and Mahjabeen(Yumna Zaidi) who are social misfits. The drama revolves around how they struggle in a society that fails to accept them for who they are and how they find love and comfort in each other.

Mehar Posh

We all enjoy a solid show about love. But not all films and shows about love have a happy ending. In fact, there are a whole lot of romantic stories out there that are sad enough to make us curl up in a ball and cry for a few hours. One such TV serial is Ayeza Khan and Danish Taimoor’s Mehar Posh, currently airing on Geo Entertainment. The drama revolves around the story of Mehru who belongs to a middle class family and her next door neighbour Shahjahan who is in love with her. An unfortunate turn of events turns Mehru’s life upside down and fate takes a different turn for Shahjahan. But will they ever be able to reunite?

Sabaat

One drama that literally stood out from the dozens of dramas being produced in 2020 has to be Sabaat undoubtedly. The drama had an ensemble cast including Mawra Hocane, Sarah Khan, Usman Mukhtar and the new entrant Ameer Gillani, who with his spectacular performance in his very first screen gig attracted the viewers’ attention. The plot revolves around the societal ‘class’ differences that do exist in our society. Hasan (Ameer Gillani) an elitist finds himself in severe difficulty when he falls for a middle class girl Anaya (Mawra). Things eventually get out of hands when Hasan’s sister (Sarah) who is very controlling and egoistic finds out about this. The story takes an exciting turn when Dr Haris (Usman) enters Miraal’s life as her psychiatrist. The drama is an eye opener which shows how hatred can ruin the lives of an entire family.

Ishqiya

Ishqiya highlights the lives of two sisters, Hamna (Ramsha Khan) and Roomi (Hania Amir) who are complete opposites when it comes to personalities where Hamna is very quiet and reserved, and Roomi on the other hand is chirpy, outgoing and carefree. The drama is a tale of trust, love and betrayal which causes both the sisters to pay heavy prices due to the misunderstandings created by Hamza (Feroze) who is married to Roomi but was once in love with Hamna. Hamza deliberately marries Roomi in order to take revenge as Hamna married Azeem (Gohar) and leaves him, but fell for her later on. The story takes twists and turns when both the couples got to know about each other’s past.

Jalan

Jalan is an intense drama, rather it wouldn’t be wrong to say that it is the most controversial drama serial of 2020. Starring Minal Khan, Emmad Irfani and Areeba Habib in the leading roles, the plot revolves around sisters Misha (Areeba) and Nisha (Minal) belonging to a middle class family. Nisha is an antagonist and a very selfish person who wants everything that her sister Misha has, she just couldn’t see her happy. Nisha being very envious, even wanted her sister’s husband Asfandyar (Emmad) who falls prey to Nisha’s charm and leaves Misha. Whereas, Nisha leaves her fiance Ahmer only for the bank balance that Asfandyar had. Nisha’s hate and jealousy also caused Misha to take her life and she suddenly changes when she gets to know about the status of his now husband, which causes a lot of tension in their lives. •
