Hajra Yamin’s ‘Oye Motti’ is a timely drama that addresses the issue of fat-shaming

Switch on the telly and chances are you will be bombarded with images of women who look nothing short of perfect. Take a walk down the street in your neighbourhood and you will be hard-pressed to find anyone who looks like that. Thankfully, ever since the body positivity movement started a couple of years ago, Pakistani entertainment industry has also broken the shackles of the conventional beauty standards and has woken up to the fact that people come in all shapes, sizes, and colours, and that you can love yourself for who you are and what you look like. The movement has now even nudged our drama industry to highlight the issue. With its portrayal of unconventional bodies, Hajra Yamin starrer Oye Motti highlights the fat-shaming culture. The drama tells the tale of a plus-sized girl who is mocked and ridiculed for her physical appearance. Speaking about her role with a publication, Hajra said, “I picked up this character because I really appreciate the fact that there are people out there who want to tell different stories.” These are just the kind of shows and women we need to see more often onscreen.
