ASK A DERMATOLOGIST

I use styling products every single day, but I think my shampoo isn’t cleaning them off completely. Now my hair’s dull! What can I do?

Some products, like silicone, build up on the hair and are hard to remove. Once or twice a week, you can use a deep cleansing shampoo that has a higher pH than other products. Clarifying shampoos are quite drying, so be sure to follow with conditioner. In any case, never use a clarifying product for more than two shampoos per week. If you want to try a more natural approach, again, a cup of apple or cider vinegar does the trick!

Are there any anti-ageing products or ingredients that work to combat ageing, without triggering breakouts?

It’s important to pay attention to how your skin responds to different ingredients. What we recommend if you’re trying a new product for the first time is to actually try it on the back of your ear – especially if you know your skin is prone to breakouts. That way it’s an area that is still close to your face, but you get a sense of how well it’s responding to your skin. Also, you don’t get breakouts where there are no pores, if you have enlarged pores on your nose or your cheeks, you could try something closer to your ear.

I have body acne – how do I get rid of it?

Try not to overdry the skin. Although sulphates are not awful for most skin types, for those with sensitive and inflamed skin, you will do well to use sulphate-free shampoos and body washes. Don’t use any loofahs or scrubbing products on your skin, you want to do as little as possible to the skin and not disrupt the skin barrier. Keep skin well-hydrated, not only topically but also by sleeping in a room with a humidifier for example. Use antibacterial hydrating sprays, any creams or sprays with lactic acid or salicylic acid will help reduce the inflammation.

Where do face oils fit into my skincare routine?

At the very end. Oils are occlusive and emollient, which means they soften skin while acting as a moisture seal. When applied on top of a humectant like hyaluronic acid or glycerin, they act as a stopgap for water loss. Even though fighting oil with oil seems counterintuitive, they can actually help mattify and balance oil production.
