The 36th annual MTV Video Music Awards, last week at the Prudential Center in Newark, did a valiant job navigating an increasingly fractured pop landscape. Though a handful of the usual zeitgeist-dominating superstars made the trek to New Jersey – among them Taylor Swift (to perform and accept awards) and Cardi B (to hold court, gloriously, at the podium) – the ceremony included other types of 2019 pop fandom, including multiple performances in Spanish and its first K-pop award, which went to BTS. Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande lead the pack of nominees, with 10 nods a piece, while newcomers Billie Eilish and Lil Nas X hold nine and eight nominations, respectively.
