ASK A NUTRITIONIST

My father recently had a heart attack and we cannot find a doctor at these times. Please suggest how to best take care of him while we are in isolation?

You can take care of him by:

1. Regularly checking his blood pressure levels and making sure they stay controlled.

2. Ensuring he takes his medication on time.

3. Withdraws smoking if he smokes.

4. Follows a low-fat and low sodium diet.

5. Walks every day for 30-45 minutes.

6. Loses weight if his BMI is above 25.

7. Manages stress and practices relaxation and meditation techniques to de-stress.

Flavoured green teas? What are your thoughts?

Green teas are packed with antioxidants and nutrients and are great for health. If added flavour helps you drink them, that’s wonderful!

How much overeating is okay? We are in quarantine and there's little else to do.

Overeating for a day won’t do any harm but continuously overeating for a number of days could derail your progress and affect your overall wellbeing. The best way to avoid overeating is to keep yourself busy. Read a book, watch a show, follow a skincare regime, play board games with your family etc. Every time you want to indulge, ask yourself if you’re really hungry or just bored.

Do you advice taking steam these days as a preventative measure?

It’s an absolute myth that steam can kill the virus. However, if you already HAVE a cough or a cold, steam can help comfort that. •
