ASK A NUTRITIONIST

Thinking about the pandemic and the fact that our health is a public matter, not private, what are some good health habits we need to adopt for our overall well-being?

First and foremost, start by fixing your eating habits. Incorporating healthy foods into your daily routine cannot just make you feel better but can strengthen your immune system too. Add lots of whole grains, leans meats, veggies, fruits, fatty fish, nuts and healthy fats into your diet.

Follow a good exercise routine. Daily exercise can help you combat multiple diseases. Fix your sleep. Being quarantined at home, it’s easy to ruin your sleep cycle. Don’t forget a good sleep is just as important for your health as everything else.

Lastly, try to stay positive throughout this crisis and focus on what you CAN do rather than what you cannot. A healthy mind makes for a healthy body.

I am 20 weeks pregnant and avoiding visiting the doctor at this time, will it be okay with no access tomedical attention?

It isn’t the most optimal situation but if you weigh the risks, visiting a hospital at this time is definitely riskier. As long as you’re feeling okay and there are no concerns with your pregnancy, try to stay at home as much as possible. You can also try to set up an online appointment with your OBGYN.

I think my entire water intake comes from iced coffee. Should I be worried?

All liquids add to your daily water intake so that is not much of a concern, however, you might want to cut back on the caffeine and try to limit it to about twice a day. Too much caffeine can lead to hypertension, fatigue, insomnia, anxiety, digestive issues and tachycardia.

I want to build some good morning habits. What should I start with?

You can take it one habit at a time. I suggest starting with adding more vegetables to your meals and trying to get a good combo of protein, carbohydrates and fats in every meal.

Frozen foods: okay or ditch?

Okay in moderation, every once in a while or if limited resources are available. Try to add in whole foods with frozen foods if you cannot absolutely avoid them. For example frozen nuggets with some bran bread and a side of grilled veggies.
