Filmmaker Shehzad Hameed wins at World Media Festival

Singapore-based Pakistani filmmaker Shehzad Hameed Ahmad’s documentary series on Afg-h-a---nistan has won two Silver awards at the prestigious World Media Festival 2020 at Hamburg, Germany. According to a press release, the award-winning documentary had only last month swept two awards at the recently held New York Festival 2020. Mr Ahmad’s insightful and captivating documentaries on the war in Afghanistan, Caught in the Crossfire and The Battle for Kabul won the awards in the Global Issues and Political documentaries category, respectively.


10-year-old Pakistani girl recognised ‘Coronavirus Hero’ by President Trump

United States President Donald Trump recognised the services of 10-year-old Laila, an American of Pakistani origin, during a ceremony held to honour “coronavirus heroes”. US embassy Islamabad shared the news on Twitter, “Congrats to 10-year-old Laila Khan, a Pakistani-American girl scout recognised by President Trump during a ceremony honouring coronavirus heroes! Laila donated 100 boxes of cookies to local medical workers & firefighters.”

Two Pakistanis shortlisted for Common wealth Youth Awards 2020

Two Pakistanis were among 16 innovators, activists and entrepreneurs from 12 countries that have been shortlisted for the Commonwealth Youth Awards 2020, organisers announced. Jaya Rajwani, who is the technical lead for ‘Aurat Raaj’; a social enterprise which creates technology-based products and services to educate girls on health, hygiene and safety, was among the Pakistanis shortlisted for the awards in the Gender Equality category, according to the Commonwealth Secretariat’s press release. Hafiz Usama Tanveer – the founder of ‘PakVitae’; a social enterprise that produces and supplies water treatment products to provide clean and accessible drinking water to rural communities and refugee camps in Pakistan – was shortlisted in the Clean Water and Sanitation category. PakVitae has so far reached over 11,000 people including victims of the Kerala flood, Afghan refugee camps and remote schools in rural areas.
