The founder of the Jang Group of Publications, Mir Khalil Ur Rahman, who is widely regarded as the father of Urdu journalism in Pakistan passed away on January 25, 1992 and exactly 29 years later, his wife Begum Mehmooda Khalil Ur Rahman joined him in his heavenly abode on October 1, 2021 at the age of 95.

Mother to Jang-Geo Editor-in-Chief, Mir Shakil Ur Rahman and Editor-in-Chief of Pakistan’s oldest weekly magazines Akhbar-e-Jehan and MAG The Weekly, Mir Javed Rahman and grandmother to Geo Television Network’s CEO Mir Ibrahim Rahman, she is attributed to raise some of Pakistan’s greatest literary minds. Mrs Rahman is survived by a son and four daughters, 24 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.

She was a lady that had led an incredible life, a lady who needs to be remembered and celebrated for her contributions as she deserves to be. She was not only a supportive wife, a loving mother and an affectionate grandparent, but also a strong pillar for all of her family. Mrs Rahman was a trailblazing woman who stood side by side her husband in times of difficulties and helped him give rise to one of the biggest media houses in Pakistan today. One might assume that a woman with such a strong and influential background must have a larger-than-life ego but in all honesty, she was one of the most down to earth and humble woman to have existed. One thing that can be said about Mrs Rahman with all certainty is that even though she wasn’t always handling business matters at the forefront, she was a constant system of spiritual support for her employees, having solved countless issues for the ones in need. All in all, she was a woman who stood up, spoke out, struggled through, and helped her family soar to greater heights.

Mrs Rahman’s funeral prayers were offered after Jumma prayer at the Rahmania Mosque on Tariq Road. She was buried at the Society Graveyard. Mufti Irshad Hussain Saidi led her funeral prayers. The crowd at her funeral was plentiful. Apart from her acquaintances and relatives, people from the literary world including senior journalists, media personalities, politicians and people belonging to various walks of life attended her funeral. Many even condoled the family via social media including Prime Minister Imran Khan, who tweeted about her sad demise and wrote, “My prayers and condolences go to the Mir family on the passing of Mir Shakil Ur Rahman’s mother and Mir Ibrahim’s grandmother.” Apart from him, President Arif Alvi, Fawad Chaudhry, Sheikh Rasheed, Yousuf Raza Gillani and many other politicians poured in their condolences on Twitter. People especially belonging to the newspaper industry shared Mir family’s grief and prayed for the departed soul. What a legacy, what a life. We were each touched by her presence and we are better because of that. Mrs Rahman’s life shall continue to be celebrated for years to come.
