Asus’ new VivoBook 13 Slate is a detachable laptop with an OLED screen

TECH NEWS

Asus is known for delving into unconventional form factors, and its latest experiment is no exception. The VivoBook 13 Slate OLED is a 13.3-inch Windows tablet with an OLED screen and a detachable keyboard which starts at $599.99. Asus claims that this one is capable of displaying 1.07 billion colours, covers 100 per cent of the DCI-P3 colour gamut, and has a 0.2-millisecond response time. It’s said to have blue-light levels up to 70 per cent lower than an LCD display. Rather than framing the Slate as purely a tablet for artists, though, Asus seems to be pushing it as an entertainment device. The company emphasises that the tablet’s 16:9 aspect ratio “provides a full-screen viewing experience”. The Slate OLED also ships with a stylus, the Asus Pen 2.0, which attaches magnetically to the chassis. Certainly, $599.99 is an affordable price for OLED products. It’s also a refreshing one for detachable Windows laptops.

Sonos’ voice assistant might work alongside Alexa but not the Google Assistant

When Sonos purchased a privacy-focused voice assistant Snips in 2019, it strongly implied that it planned to build an assistant that would “add to our customers’ ease of use and control” instead of going head-to-head with bigger assistants from other big tech companies. Nearly two years later, we might be close to being using the company’s homegrown assistant, as a Reddit user found code in the Sonos app that appears to show voice commands for Sonos Voice Control (via Protocol). You’ll be able to do things like play and pause music, adjust the volume, and check the battery. It is also found what looks to be the logo for Sonos’ assistant and evidence suggesting you’ll be able to have it assistant enabled alongside Amazon’s Alexa but not alongside the Google Assistant. Sonos is also locked in a legal battle with Google, suing the search giant in January 2020 for allegedly copying its speaker tech. By making its offering its own voice assistant, Sonos might be able to let customers have multiple assistants at once.
