Reverse purple eyeliner

This makeup look is a bit more complicated, as it has many different elements, but we think it's totally worth a try – especially since we can actually go out this festive season. There's an iridescent lilac pigment highlighting her brows, a plum tone along her brow bones, and smoky black wings at the outer corners of her eyes. Then, there's violet-coloured eyeliner that extends along her lower lashes and into the inner corners of her eyes – what we often call a reverse eyeliner – and another touch of shimmery pale purple that fills in the space between the violet eyeliner and her tear ducts.

Classic wings and crimson lips

You can never go wrong with the classic pairing of black winged eyeliner and red lipstick, whether you go with a bright cherry colour, or a deeper merlot, like Elle Fanning recently wore for the LACMA Art + Film Gala.

Iridescent eyes

Iridescence is one of the most magical ways to wear shimmer, and it captures that ethereal wintriness we all look forward to during the holidays. Zoey Deutch drew more attention to her iridescent lavender eye shadow – Sephora Collection Colourful Eyeshadow in Magnolia Garden would be a great similar pick – with extra-bold, black cat-eye wings. Don't be afraid to wear just a clear or nude gloss on your lips – your lids will be doing all the eye-catching.

Emerald smoky eyes

This season, trade your go-to "statement lip" for a "statement eye" instead. This bold look can be achieved using any pigmented colour, but to create Lucy Hale's Poison Ivy vibes, the makeup artist used multiple different shades of green, including Chanel Longwear Créme Eyeshadow in Vederame all over the lid and under the lash line.

Kohl cat eye

If glitzy eye makeup or bright red lips aren't quite your thing, there are still plenty of ways to get into the celebratory spirit. Lily Aldridge shows off a casually cool, ‘60s-inspired look by way of nude-brown lipstick and dark-rimmed cat eyes, paired with loose, effortless waves.

Gold-flecked eyes

While your party look likely won't include a 10-pound veil like Bella Hadid's Met Gala glam did, there are certainly other elements of her style worth stealing. Using a twinkly gold liner (like E.L.F.'s Stardust Eyeliner), trace your top lashes and continue to the line around the tear ducts, creating a small "V" around the inner corners – an effect that catches the light against an otherwise neutral palette.

All red everything

Give the monochromatic trend a festive spin by complimenting crimson lips with a dusting of blush – we love Rare Beauty Soft Pinch Liquid Blush in Grateful – and shadow in similar shades. Hell, match it to your dress while you're at it.

Gilded nudes

Think nude but expensive. If gold eye shadow on its own feels meh, mix things up with a bit of bronze, smoky liner, and a warm, chestnut colour on your lips, like Merit Shade Slick Tinted Lip Oil in Taupe.

Frosty silver

As Gigi Hadid proves, glitter can be a neutral. She wore a gradient of silver and gunmetal sparkle from her lash line to just above her creases and paired it with nude lips and dewy skin for a look fit for an ethereal ice queen.
