While it seems that most dating reality shows are manipulated and contrived, none are as contrived as The Future Diary. In this show, two strangers are put together and given a diary that maps out their entire relationship. With highlights of the season of The Future Diary, we’re told that these two young singles start the experience off as strangers. They are given diaries that map out the next steps of their relationship. Then, on the final day, they’re supposed to go their separate ways. The social experiment is to see if they fall in love in the meantime. We then go back to the day before they meet. Maai Nakasone is a 19-year-old student from Okinawa, gets the diary, which says that on July 1, “On a visit to Yokahama, you will meet your soul mate out of the blue. After your joint project, there appears before you a single sunflower. The symbolism of the sunflower is ‘love at first sight’.” Takuto Wakamatsu, 24, who is from Hokkiado but works as a chef in Tokyo. His diary has the same two entries. The next day, they sit in a theater in Yokahama, not knowing that they’re about to meet. After a mysterious presentation, the lights go on and they are the only two left sitting in the audience. They introduce each other, but Maai is so nervous that she doesn’t even remember what she told him. The concept of it is solid: Can the producers put together two strangers, dictate how their relationship will go, and see if they fall in love?
