The Netflix exclusive documentary leads by saying that “some things should not be left undone just because they’re difficult”. Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive follows ice diver and free diver Johanna Nordblad. Now aged 46, she embarks on a journey that she hopes will finish with her breaking the world record for the amount of distance travelled underneath solid ice. And with only breath allowed, the designer has quite the mission on her hands. The documentary splits between English and Finnish quite a lot. And, to be honest, that helps keep the audience engaged as it is more than easy to become distracted by one moment of lower entertainment, which this documentary has its fair few moments of. Even so, Johanna’s journey is inspiring and shows tremendous levels of bravery, fearlessness, and willpower towards her aim to be the best. As she’s already a record holder and a bike accident left her leg in a thousand pieces, many would not blame Johanna for simply settling with the world record. But no! That’s not enough, and she wants more. However, more than just focusing on Johanna’s personal mission, Hold Your Breath: The Ice Dive also retells how her dangerous mission affects her family members. As they fear that Johanna may die from her efforts, they voice their opinion that they wish she’d give up on her attempts. Whilst the documentary is nothing new, it might provide just enough interest to warrant a look.
