ASK A DERMATOLOGIST

If you could give just three skincare tips, what would they be?

1. Be consistent with skincare products – use the right products for your skin type and don’t chop and change them before you’ve had a chance – around three months – to see what’s working.

2. Always seek a therapist’s advice and try not to guess and diagnose for yourself.

3. Cleansing is the foundation of all good skincare. Use a cleanser that’s gentle enough to take over your eyes, as this is a sign it’s gentle for your skin, too. A cleanser that stings your eyes is going to be highly stimulating, whereas we recommend stimulating skin with a liquid exfoliant that can be removed and only used as often as needed, rather than daily to wash skin.

Should you use a face oil if you have oily skin?

Yes – they’re great to use on oilier skins in the evening, though this can also take the form of a moisturiser containing oils. Using oils on oily skin can retrain it to produce less oil. We recommend using them at nighttime as this is when your skin does the most of its regenerating, and it will utilise the ingredients on its surface to form new, healthier behaviours.

Is it better for your hair to change the shampoo and conditioner you use every few months?

Only if you are unhappy with how your hair looks or feels. Hair is reactive to products in general, so changing your shampoo and conditioner can create a different effect. For example, if you want more smoothness, try a hydrating shampoo, which deposits moisturisers that close the hair cuticle. But if you are using hair care that you love, there is no reason to make a change.

Can you suggest a good anti-aging moisturiser for combination skin? I'm 42 and have dry and oily skin.

Read the label on your moisturiser carefully and make sure it says "oil-free" and "noncomedogenic," which means it won't clog your pores. As long as it meets those two criteria, you shouldn't have a problem with greasy skin or breakouts. While you're at it, check the label for "broad spectrum SPF 30" to protect your skin from sun damage and help prevent wrinkles. And if you'd like additional anti-aging ingredients, peptides are a good option, as they won't increase your skin's sensitivity to the sun. Our pick: L'Oréal Paris Youth Code SPF 30 Day Lotion.
