Sharmeen Obaid, HSY, Mehwish Hayat and others made it to the Oscars committee for 2020

The pandemic has not stopped the world’s culture czars from selecting their candidates for the Best International Feature Oscar. Academy of Motion Picture Arts & Sciences rules require that the submitted motion pictures must first be released theatrically in their respective countries between October 1, 2019 and December 31, 2020, after which the Academy will announce the final eligible submissions. The shortlist of 10 will be revealed on February 9, 2021. Last year saw 91 contenders, but we’re likely to see fewer for 2021. However, The Pakistani Academy Selection Committee invited Pakistani filmmakers to submit their films for Oscar consideration in the ‘International Feature Film Award’ category for the 93rd Academy Awards by 20th October 2020. This marked the eighth consecutive submission by the Pakistani Academy Selection Committee having previously submitted Zinda Bhaag, Dukhtar, MOOR, Mah-e-Mir, Saawan, Cake and Laal Kabootar to represent the best of Pakistani cinema. The Oscar committee for 2020 was chaired by two-time Academy Award and Emmy winning filmmaker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy and included Faisal Kapadia, Asad-ul-Haq, Maheen Zia, Hamza Bangash, Bee Gul, Syed Muhd Ahmed, Mehwish Hayat, Hasan Shehreyar Yasin and Asim Abbasi.
