Abdullah Qureshi pays tribute to Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan with Kadi Takray

Remembering the legend

The art of the tribute performance is a tricky one. Honouring the icon with an electrifying performance, while putting your own stamp on the song and also trying not to overshadow the original is a tough formula to crack. But when it's done right, there's nothing quite like listening to your favourite artists channel their influences. To pay tribute to yet another musical legend and qawwal, Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, singer and songwriter Abdullah Qureshi collaborated with various folk musicians from all over Pakistan and Gulshan Jahan, the granddaughter of Pakistani folk singer Reshma. Talking about his experience of recreating the legend’s track, Abdullah said, “We didn’t really do it the Nusrat way, reason being that no one can do it the Nusrat way, so Nosheen Bukhari (a colleague of mine) wrote a few lines and those lines were sung by Gulshan Jahan. I only sang the hook.” Kadi Takray revolves around a complicated love story and is narrated through beautiful melodies, lyrics and some indigenous instruments.
