ASK A DERMATOLOGIST

My hair are super dry. What is the best way to moisturise my dry hair?

Skip the daily shampooing and do it on alternate days. Also, use a shampoo containing moisturiser which are specifically designed for such hair. Avoid extreme weather conditions and excessively hot water for washing your hair, as very hot water strips off the natural oil and moisture content from your hair, making it dull and frizzy. Use thick conditioner creams after shampoo and let it sit for five to 10 minutes for adequate absorption. Avoid using chemicals when taming frizzy hair. Deep conditioning the hair overnight on weekly basis may be helpful. Avoid hot styling tools like irons and frequent blow dries. Eat well and avoid fad diets.

I normally wear my hair in a high ponytail. I feel like my forehead is getting bigger day by day because of the excessive pulling of hair. Is it just me or can pulling my hair back actually cause thinning?

Yes, a constant pulling pressure on hair may result in traction alopecia. It is advisable to keep changing your hairstyles frequently. I would recommend getting front bangs or side parting for some time.

How can I treat dark elbows, knees, knuckles and underarms?

By using regular moisturisers and wearing an SPF regularly, by avoiding trauma and friction and also by wearing protective clothing one can improve the dark areas over joints. If the skin over the joints is extensively dark and thick then taking professional help in the form of strong exfoliating creams, ointments and chemical peels may improve the condition in a better way.

I know my daily beauty routine should definitely include a cleanser and sunscreen, but how often should I be using exfoliants, toners, antioxidants, and other skincare products?

I am glad to know that you are cleansing regularly and applying sunblock is mandatory on daily basis even on the cloudy days. Gentle exfoliation may be done once or twice a week max. Whereas, if you have a problematic skin like acne prone or you have some pigmentation or scaring issues, then it’s advisable for you to take help from a dermatologist for a deeper exfoliation with chemicals in the form of professional chemical peels done at the dermatologists’ clinics. If all is well and you just want to get a glowing wrinkle free skin in a long run then I would recommend you to get hydra peel sessions on a regular basis to keep your skin active and in a regenerative mode. Using a toner brings back your skin pH to normal and tightens up the pores. An antioxidant may be used twice a day. Vitamin C serums are the best antioxidant to apply.
