ASK A DERMATOLOGIST

It took me years to grow my hair to the ideal long length. How can I maintain long hair?

To maintain long hair you need to take care of them properly. Just washing and shampooing your hair is not enough to keep them healthy. You need to schedule regular trims to keep them in healthy state, also shampoo and condition them as per your hair type and dry them with care. Avoid tight hairstyles that might pull and damage the hair shaft. What you eat also matters, so have a balanced diet to keep your hair long and strong.

I have colour-treated hair that is prone to breakage. How can I prevent both that and colour fading at the same time?

If your hair breaks easily, it's probably either very fine or has been overly bleached and lost its elasticity. Hair colour always fades eventually, but it will fade more quickly when hair is damaged. To keep it from becoming more porous and brittle, avoid bleach, shampoo infrequently, and only get highlights every eight weeks. Try not to heat-style more than a few times a week, and always use a protective products. Add strength and moisture by using a conditioning treatment with natural oils once a week, and trade in your regular shampoo and conditioner for ones that are enriched with protein. Also, drink plenty of water, and take a biotin supplement. It can take up to six months to see results, but it works.

What should we be looking out for when buying a good moisturiser?

Look out for ingredients which will help to support the barrier function of the skin. For example, a good moisturiser should include ingredients such as hyaluronic acid, aloe and glycerine. These are humectants that pull moisture into the skin, other ingredients such as ceramides will then help to lock in that moisture. If you have dry skin, look to buy products containing occlusives such as shea and cocoa butter, which can help to reduce water loss from the skin.

What is the best way to take off make up?

Foam cleansers are good for oily and acne prone skin or if you have a lot of makeup on the skin which you want to remove. Micellar water is good for removing makeup especially in sensitive skin but after this you still need to make sure you cleanse your skin too.
