Voluptuous and plush - All you need to know about the season’s dazzler – velvet

In the summer, a diaphanous silk outfit is often the go-to choice for festive wear. But it’s winter, which is none too kind on bared skin and when the only thing flowing around you is your enveloping outerwear (or sheets of sleet, depending on your locale).

So this holiday party season, why not reach for silk’s lushly rich, cold-climate-friendly cousin, velvet? It’s the type of go-big-or-go-home festive fabric whose elevated sheen makes it perfect for parties, and weddings. No longer is a velvet outfit simply an outfit, if rendered in velvet, evokes royalty, along with an air of romanticism. Velvet has jewel-tone colours and a rich, luxe touch. The luster of the material gives a touch of seasonal flair during the festivities.

And it is not just these latest collections where the fabric is making an appearance. Just look years back and you’ll find velvet outfits reigning supreme in everyone’s winter festive wardrobe.

But now, velvet, the cult classic, is getting a vibrant upgrade this season, with fashion labels putting a fresh spin on the fabric. Although, a plain velvet outfit in a rich colour is enough to make you stand out, but now designers have started adding embroideries and motifs to this sumptuous fabric.

Floral embroideries are taking over even on the luscious velvet ensembles. And while velvet outfits have always come in darker shades, designers are adding a pop of colour to them with intricate embroidered designs, instantly inspiring an urge to shop these exuberant pieces.

That being said, it’s hard not to feel celebratory – and warm – when wearing something so innately luxurious. So, if you are in need of a sartorial boost during this chilly month of back-to-back nighttime fetes and parties, don’t just slip into any dress – make it something velvet.
