ASK A DIETITIAN

How can you make sure you stay full until lunchtime?

It can take some trial and error to work out how much you need to eat for breakfast to stay full until lunch because not everyone is the same. Be sure not to under-eat for breakfast. We think many people try to 'be good’ (i.e. they try to eat less food) which means they become ravenous as the day goes on and end up overeating because they’re hungry and tired. We prefer to eat like the French do – which means we like lunch to be our largest meal. Most people under-eat during the day and come home after work and find it hard to stop eating. This works for us, so it’s good to find what suits your body.

What’s the best kind of protein drink for beginners in bodybuilding?

Whey protein powder tops the list. Whey is extremely easy to digest and provides a concentrated amount of branched-chain amino acids, which increase protein synthesis – the muscle’s ability to take in and use protein for growth. Whey protein is especially beneficial when taken within 30 minutes before and immediately after training. It’s easy to absorb, allowing the amino acids to quickly reach the muscles and kick-start the growth and recovery process.

Is it possible to be overweight and yet be perfectly healthy at the same time?

No. A higher Body Mass Index (BMI) has always been associated with a higher risk for heart attacks, strokes, and high blood pressure. However, classifying a person as healthy based purely on their BMI is also inaccurate in the first place. Body fat percentage is a better determinant of health, a slim person with a high body fat percentage can also have high risk of chronic disease.

Does lying down straight after eating contribute to weight gain?

No, lying down right after eating does not lead to weight gain, and taking a shower right after eating has no effect on a person's weight either. Weight control is all about the balance of calories: As long as you take in less calories, or burn more calories than you consume, it will lead to weight loss. It is possible that a person's poor sleep habits may lead to weight gain, rather than their pattern of eating just before sleeping.
