It’s normal to experience itchiness on your skin. But sometimes, it may be a sign of a more serious condition. If the itch is accompanied by redness, swelling, or skin rashes of any kind (including psoriasis), it’s important to see a doctor. Dermatologists can help diagnose what kinds of conditions you might have based on your symptoms alone because they see so many types of skin diseases every day. They’re also trained to identify and treat skin infections and skin cancer. The doctor will take a look at your skin, ask about any other symptoms you might be having, such as pain or fever, and may do some tests to rule out more serious conditions. They’ll also recommend treatment options based on what the diagnosis is – whether it’s eczema, psoriasis, or others.
Ideally, babies under six months should not spend time directly in the sun. Because babies’ skin is much more sensitive than adult skin, sunscreens should be avoided if possible. The best sun protection for babies is to keep them in the shade and dress them in long sleeves, long pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.
Dermatologists take a multipronged approach to managing depigmentation, which means addressing small spots differently than those that involve larger sections of skin. That may include a combination of topical therapies (such as ointments and creams), phototherapy, and systemic steroids. Thankfully, now there's this whole fourth category of investigational medicines that are available. Surgical treatments are available as well. The idea being that, once the immune part has been resolved, if the fundamental problem is that we don't have enough melanocytes in the area, we can borrow melanocytes from other normally pigmented parts of the body and replace them into the part where they’re missing.
We suggest wetting your hair before taking a dip – it will absorb the water, which means it can't soak up as much chlorine. A swim cap can also help. Another tip: Alternate your current shampoo and conditioner with a strengthening one, which repairs damage.
