A giant strawberry has been declared the heaviest in the world after a year in a freezer. Chahi Ariel, a farmer in Israel, entered the Guinness World Records after growing the mammoth fruit. The berry weighed in at 289g and has been declared the world's largest after the farmer spent a year farming it. It was 18cm long and 34cm in circumference, the online Guinness entry said. The strawberry was picked on the family farm near Netanya in central Israel in February 2021. Chahi had kept the berry stored in the freezer ever since. He said, "We waited for a year for the results. We kept it in the freezer for a year. It's no longer as pretty as it was." The strawberry is a local variety called Ilan and does tend to grow quite large. Chahi claims his record-setting fruit has shrunk since he first picked it. The previous record was a strawberry grown in 2015 in Fukuoka, Japan, which weighed 250g. Chahi said he jumped up and down, laughing and singing when he got the news. He said, "We are very happy to be in the Guinness World Records."
