In Pieces Of Her, Toni Collette plays a seemingly “normal” mom in a small town who ends up having a lot of dark secrets. Her daughter then tries to put the pieces together after a violent incident reveals more about her mother. Andrea ‘Andy’ Oliver (Bella Heathcote) moved back to Belle Isle from New York to take care of her mother Laura (Toni Collette) when she was sick with cancer. Laura is back to 100%, but Andy isn’t interested in going back. She has the job as the 911 dispatcher and seems to enjoy living in her mom’s home. Laura encourages her to figure out what to do with her life, Andy pushes back telling her that she always knew what she wanted to do. As they’re talking to a former classmate of Andy’s a guy whom Laura spotted earlier gets up and starts shooting people. Laura instinctively covers Andy and stands up to defend her daughter and after the gunman stabs her, she uses a knife to slit his throat. The efficiency Laura uses to dispatch this shooter is shocking to Andy. Half-conscious from loss of blood, Laura says she’s cold and tells Andy not to talk to the police, a thought that doesn’t sit well with Andy. After Laura is patched up, she decides to leave the hospital; and demands that Andy move out of her house.
