Ramadan special serial ‘Hum Tum’ is dismantling gender stereotypes

Much needed!

Pakistan has not always been at the forefront of the fight for gender equality. Even in Pakistani cinema, too often it’s the men who wrestle with world-changing events, while the women are left to tend to matters at home, or look on longingly as their man saves the world. But occasionally the balance shifts, yielding some memorable stories of men and women reaching beyond their assigned station. One such drama defying the stereotypical gender roles is the Ramadan special serial Hum Tum. Starring Ahad Raza Mir, Ramsha Khan, Junaid Khan, and Sarah Khan as leads, Hum Tum shows a certain reversal of roles in its plot. Neha (Ramsha Khan) is often seen driving a Vespa while Sasha is a computer genius whose expertise is to hack accounts. And as for the boys, they are experts in house chores. Adam (Ahad Raza Mir) is great at keeping his home clean and organised while Sarmad (Junaid Khan) loves to cook and is a chef by profession. Apart from this, the drama also sheds light on the obsession for a male child. All in all, Hum Tum feels like a breath of fresh air.
