LG TURNED ITS 48-INCH OLED TV INTO A HUGE 4K GAMING MONITOR

LG’s giant 48-inch OLED television has amazing colour and FreeSync Premium on a 120Hz panel – but it’s not exactly suited to be the perfect PC screen. Now, LG is tailoring its television a bit more for desk use with the new LG UltraGear 48GQ900, which adds some new features. Chief among them: the stand. While the LG C1 48 and LG CX 48 televisions featured a big wide base that discourages any attempt at desktop cable management and blocks rest of your desk from view, the new UltraGear monitor has a more traditional V-shaped foot that lifts the whole screen off the table. There’s a built-in two-port USB 3.0 hub, a DisplayPort, an easily-accessible 3.5mm four-pole headset jack if you don’t want to rely on its built-in 20W stereo speakers, and a remote control that might make sense for dedicated gaming use. It’s got a honking dial and buttons to change video inputs, audio outputs, and a toggle for LG’s Game Mode. The limiters protect your OLED screen from burn-in, but they’re a little overzealous, and companies that have built gaming monitors around LG’s OLED screens haven’t figured out a way to deal with that.

BARNES & NOBLE INTRODUCES A CHEAP E-READER TO COMPETE WITH AMAZON’S KINDLE

Barnes & Noble hasn’t completely forgotten its lineup of Nook e-readers. You can preorder the new Nook GlowLight 4e for $119.99. That’s about $20 cheaper than Amazon’s extremely popular Paperwhite. But, unlike Amazon’s products, there are no ads you have to pay to avoid, and you can easily sideload content. The Nook GlowLight 4e charges via USB-C and has 8GB of built-in storage, which is standard for an e-reader at this price. It also has a 6-inch 212 ppi E Ink display with illumination. That’s better than the $89.99 Amazon Kindle with its 6-inch 167 ppi display, but the Kobo Nia starts at $99.99 and has the same display. The Kobo Clara HD retails for the exact same as the GlowLight 4e but also has a 300 ppi display. But what the Nook GlowLight 4e has that both Kobo and Amazon lack is... buttons. Instead of tapping or swiping across the E Ink display and hoping it registers the input, the Nook GlowLight 4e has page-turning buttons on the left and right bezels. Both Amazon and Kobo reserve that feature for much pricier products.
