Hum TV’s latest offering Wabaal is an interesting watch for viewers as it shows the story of a middle-class girl who pretends to be from the elite class. The superbly talented Sarah Khan plays the lead here and she has impressed us with her ‘wannabe attitude’.

Written by Qasiera Hayat of Ishq-e-Laa and directed by Amin Iqbal, the drama also stars Shagufta Ejaz, Ali, Meerub Ali, and Talha Chahour in pivotal roles.

The first episode kicks off with Sarah Khan as Anam, hanging out with her university friends. Although she belongs to a middle-class family in front of her friends she pretends to be someone from the elite class. By showing so, she is hiding her insecurities about her status in society but the poor girl doesn’t know that she has to pay back for lying to her friends.

At home, Anam’s younger sister(Meerub) is planning to surprise her with a small get-together for a birthday celebration but hardly values her actions. She is more interested in opening expensive gifts she gets from her friends.

The drama highlights an important issue of interest-based loans provided by middle-class women to needy persons. Shagfta Ejaz plays a role of a widower who lives on the earnings she gets by giving the loan to the needy under interest-based conditions. There is a background story of her character, she may be involved in murder for which she remains in prison for some time. Shagfta’s brother-in-law(Saleem Sheikh) highlights it during an intense conversation with her.

The drama has a love angel too- Talha Chahour (Faraz) comes to live in Anum’s neighborhood – his accidental meeting with Anum indicates that something interesting is going to happen between them.

Acting-wise, all have done a superb job but Shagfta Ejaz impressed me the most in the scene where she gets scared at night – the actress shows off her brilliant skill in that scene. Sarah Khan and Meerub have done their part convincingly. However, I don’t like the idea to show Sarah Khan as a university going girl – she doesn’t fit in that part. –WJ
