The five-day star-studded Lakme Fashion Week was recently held in Mumbai, India. The bi-annual extravagant affair makes headlines for its long list of Bollywood showstoppers and yet again brought together a hoard of celebrities, socialites and the best of designers who showcased their avant-garde designs. Here’s a look at what happened during the grand fashion event…
First day of the event began with designers Rixi and Tinka who showcased their collection half Full CURVE, which was the highlight of this year’s showcase, as it featured women to be body positive and feel confident in their own skin. The shows featured curvy models which isn’t usually the case. First day also saw celebrity couple Shahid and Mira Kapoor looking beautiful in their tailored ensembles and complemented each other perfectly in Anita Dongre’s Songs of Summer collection. Safari dresses were a thing on the runway this season while funky prints and bold colours also took the audience’s breath away.
The second day was dedicated to sustainable fashion all across the ramp. Attendees lauded fresh colours and structured dresses in dotted and striped patterns. On the other hand, sporty fashion also took centre stage as comfort wear from jogger pants to hoodies were spotted paired along with T-shirts and blazers to make the casual look appear more wearable. Everything boho was the mantra, as earring, rose-tinted shades, and beaded necklaces were seen being sported by models all around. Another thing that won the spotlight was the use of earthy tones, flattering cuts and spotless whites in a few collections.
Day three kick-started with Tarun Tahiliani’s collection Tarakini, which was a subtle explosion of subtly sequined and embellished fabrics. His muse for the day was the pretty Kriti Sanon, who looked like a goddess in an intricately embroidered ensemble. Another big gun of India’s fashion industry, Manish Malhotra revealed his capsule collection and used natural fibre Merino wool for his designs. Yami Gautam looked gorgeous while walking the ramp for Manish Malhotra in an elaborate tilla and zari embroidery dress. Sonakshi Sinha and Karan Johar walked for the eccentric collection The Louche by Falguni and Shane Peacock, whose designs gathered quite an attention as the highlight of the day.
Lakme Fashion Week’s fourth day began with an array of designs that witnessed bouts of clothing that were rather gender neutral where the use of micro pleated fabric was quite generous in dresses for both, men and women. Chikankari was quite the highlight as the attendees saw separates made of the fabric in a rather contemporary and fusioned manner, suitable for every occasion. Colour palette mostly comprised of whites and pastels with timeless silhouettes. The runway also saw fusion wear like crop jackets teamed with shararas and while kurtis were paired with capris. Pink was quite the colour on day four, as Nishka Lulla’s collaboration with Caprese sported the use of the hue quite generously. Laces and ruffles were what Aikeyah’s collection was largely focused on.
The last day of the fashion week saw veteran designer Anamika Khanna close the show with a collection best suited for the grand finale. Khanna’s ready-to-wear collection was inspired by millennials, who according to her collection, were bold and daring enough to wear their individual self on their sleeves. Star of the show was none other than the stunning Kareena Kapoor who was dressed to kill and took the event by storm in her usual slaying manner. Luxury couture, prêt, bridal, were a thing on the last day while florals and ethereal lehengas full of intricate embroidery were also what became the talk of the town even after the end of the five-day glamorous affair.
