The human rights activist Malala Yousufzai drew admiring glances from all as she walked the red carpet of Oscars 2023 wearing a silver sequin Ralph Lauren Collection gown. She also selected jewellery by Fred Leighton that belonged to Queen Soraya Tarzi of Afghanistan, including a 19th-century diamond ring and a pair of diamond pendant earrings from the 1920s. Queen Soraya founded the first women's publication in Afghanistan. She was a fierce advocate for women's rights and gender equality.

Malala also wore emeralds by London-based Santi Jewels. The Emerald Flower ring showcases four 17th-century Colombian carved emeralds that surround a portrait-cut diamond, all set in platinum on a ring also embellished with diamonds.
