THE NEWLY LAUNCHED JBL TOUR PRO 2 EARBUDS HAVE A SCREEN

Are we holding the future of wireless earbuds in my hands? Or are JBL’s Tour Pro 2 buds – with a charging case that has its own built-in display – a parlor trick negated by the smartwatch? The Tour Pro 2 are the first to come to market with an interactive case; HP has announced something similar and Apple patent filings suggest that the AirPods maker is at least exploring this concept. But JBL’s earbuds are here now and start shipping today in the US after launching in other markets earlier this year. The Tour Pro 2 include an exhaustive, well-rounded list of features. Their adaptive noise-cancellation, which adjusts in real time based on the loudness of your environment, is impressively strong and comparable to the upper tier of competition. Battery life is another highlight and rated at up to eight hours of continuous listening with ANC on or 10 with it off. JBL also notes that the earbuds are ready for LE Audio spec and will be updated to enable it once the spec goes mainstream.

THE THINKPHONE IS TAKING MOTOROLA IN THE RIGHT DIRECTION

The Lenovo ThinkPhone by Motorola, has a few things going for it that recent mainstream, high-end Moto devices like 2022’s Edge Plus have come up short on: a full IP68 water-resistance rating, a healthy four-year security update policy, and a sensible $699 asking price. There’s also a capable Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset and a big 6.6-inch 1080p OLED with a smooth-scrolling 144Hz refresh rate. On top of all that, there’s Motorola’s Ready for PC, a suite of continuity features that work with Windows PCs and is right at home with Lenovo’s ThinkPad business laptops. At the heart of the ThinkPhone is a Snapdragon 8 Plus Gen 1 chipset, which Qualcomm released in the second half of 2022 as a step-up version of the 8 Gen 1. It’s paired with 8GB of RAM, which is plenty for keeping daily tasks running smoothly. The ThinkPhone’s screen is a large 6.6-inch OLED panel with 1080p resolution and a top refresh rate of 144Hz. It’s bright enough to see in bright daylight, and that high refresh rate gives a smooth appearance to animations and scrolling.
