Top fashion trends that shaped the year.
From the vibrant pink “Barbiecore” to the laid-back and easy-breezy styles, like cargo pants, the year has witnessed a surge of eccentric fashion and viral moments that captivated the online world. As we approach the end of 2023, let's reminisce and revisit some of the standout fashion trends of the year.

Sheer Clothing
The fashion world witnessed a revival of sheer tops over vests and camis, along with transparent slips layered over tees and jeans this year. Sheer clothing took centre stage as a major fashion trend for spring 2023. Our local divas took inspiration from the international "Bare it all" trend and incorporated the beautiful sheer fabric in their Eid designs and promotional looks, while the designers had a blast experimenting with the fabric and came out with a ton of shoots and runway looks throughout the year. The sheer trend had never really gone out from our local fashion scene, to be honest. But with the rest of the fashion world catching up on the trend as well this year, the fashion enthusiasts sure received a whole lot of diverse inspirations.

Sequins
The amount of shine on the 2023 runways and red carpets would make you think we are back in the roaring '20s. While sequins may feel over as soon as the clock strikes midnight on January this year, designers are making a case for "daytime shine" – wearable separates that can spice up even the most basic staples like tank tops and blue jeans. While this trend comes in all metallic shades (gold, bronze, rose gold etc.), go one step ahead and try out the liquid silver look that can double as a neutral.

Barbiecore
The viral fashion trend dubbed "Barbiecore," characterised by a distinct shade of pink, captured the larger-than-life spirit of the iconic doll. Its popularity soared, reaching new heights with the release of Greta Gerwig's movie Barbie this year. It wasn’t just the movie that broke records, but the marketing strategies for its promotion were also like nothing seen before. It engaged the entire world, celebrities, influencers, public, alike, in dressing up in the characteristic pink colour of the Barbie world.

Crochet
Crochet clothing emerged as a major trend on and off the runways this year, experiencing a notable resurgence. The appeal lies in these comfortable and breathable garments, offering an effortless outfit solution for hot summer days. No trend was more ever-present on the spring/summer 2023 runways than crochet, with flowy dresses with fringe and open-weave tops. Celebrity stylists were soon to take notice and followed after to up their clients’ street-wear game. To extend the shelf life of the warm-weather trend, the stars opted for timeless silhouettes and layerable pieces like crochet tanks that could be worn over long-sleeve turtlenecks and button-down shirts come winter.

Cargo Pants
Cargo pants, characterised by baggy legs, long hems, and ample pocket space, became another favoured look for 2023. Evolving from their loose predecessors, cargo pants now embrace a more modern, form-fitting style. Relaxed, utilitarian wear was in for the year which set the stage for the return of the cargo pants. But these aren't the shapeless, low-rise pants of the Y2K era. For warmer weather, this trend was translated into tailored silhouettes, interesting pocket placements, elevated fabrics like silk and organza, and colours that go beyond khaki and olive.

Denim Reimagined
Denim made a strong comeback this year! The revival of this vintage style was modern, casual, and pushed the boundaries of innovation. From double-waisted jeans to carpenter jeans, it had been a while since we were this excited about denim trends. It seemed like even the most luxe runway designers agreed, sending out their interpretation of the trend. Celebrities and influencers also had a blast including this trend in their streetwear looks. Not had enough of it yet? Whatever category you decide on, opt for timeless cuts and silhouettes that can stay in your closet rotation once the novelty wears off.

Maxi Skirts
The '70s maxi skirt trend experienced a significant revival on the fashion scene this summer. Known for their versatility, these skirts look amazing and can help anyone achieve a stunning appearance when paired with the right tops. In response to the ultra-impractical miniskirts of 2022, maxi skirts dominated 2023. In line with the cargo and denim trends, we got to witness lots of low-rise, pocket-adorned silhouettes and floor-grazing jean skirts, as well as styles in various prints and unexpected materials like velvet. Long live long hemlines!
