Power corrupts; absolute power corrupts absolutely.  – John Dalberg-Acton

EQUALITY IN EDUCATION FOR ALL
Recently, I met a friend whom I have known for a long time as an intelligent person. He was a position holder in school as well as in college when we used to study together in the same institution. I asked him about his academic pursuits, and was shocked to know that after doing intermediate, he had left education and had started working as a labourer in a factory in Karachi as he was unable to afford the expenses of higher education. He had not even applied for admission to any university, and simply gave up on the idea of pursuing any further studies so that he could put food on the family table. It is a harsh reality that every year, many bright students in Pakistan do not pursue higher education owing to their inability to afford the exorbitant expenses of universities. However, the universities and the government do not seem to be too concerned about this. In the past, public universities were the only source of higher education for the lower-middle-class students. However, even they have now become too expensive for the poor to afford. Sadly, public-sector universities have been increasing fees without considering the plight of students. Clearly, this is a significant loss to the country because a lot of talented students who might be able to perform extraordinarily in academic and professional lives remain deprived of higher education due to financial constraints. The governments as well as the authorities concerned must ask all public-sector universities in the country to rationalise their respective fee structure so that everyone, whether poor or rich, may get higher education.

COLLAPSING HEALTHCARE SYSTEM
Public health issues are escalating in society, and deserve the attention of all concerned. One of the primary public health challenges that demands immediate attention is that of the spike in the spread of diabetes. On the other hand, lack of awareness, shortage of resources and failure to take preventive measures have together exacerbated the situation, leading to adverse consequences. Additionally, cancer poses a significant threat to the health and safety of the community. The rising incidence of cancer requires a coordinated effort from both the public and private sectors with respect to implementing solutions and preventive strategies that are effective. Public health is a shared responsibility, and community awareness is a vital first step in addressing these challenges. The national media should highlight these issues and offer potential solutions. Increased public awareness can empower people to make informed choices at the individual level, and contribute to the overall wellbeing of the community. The local health authorities should prioritise the allocation of resources, research and infrastructure. By fostering an open dialogue on public health issues, we can work together to find sustainable solutions and promote a healthier and more resilient community.
Sehar Khan,
Karachi.
