Palm Springs International Film Festival 2025
- 01 Feb - 07 Feb, 2025
The 82nd annual Golden Globes took place in Los Angeles, California. The star-studded awards ceremony, hosted by comedian Nikki Glaser, celebrated the year’s buzziest film and television projects. Leading the nominations this year included films Emilia Pérez, Anora, The Substance, Challengers, Babygirl, and Wicked, among others; The Diplomat, Sh•gun, The Bear, Hacks, and more were up for television awards. Of course, this means some of Hollywood’s top stars came out for the affair. Angelina Jolie, Kate Winslet, Cynthia Erivo, Zendaya, Pamela Anderson, Demi Moore, and Nicole Kidman are just a few of the nominated leading ladies that were seen on the red carpet.
The evening kicked off with a glitzy red carpet, and it was certainly a fashion spectacle worth tuning in for. The Golden Globes has a history of being graced with some of the most memorable red carpet dresses of all time. Take Lupita Nyong’o and her red Ralph Lauren cape dress in 2014, or Margot Robbie in a plastic-fantastic Barbie-pink Armani gown just last year – glamour and drama always abound.
A sweep for Sh•gun and a potent showing for Emilia Pérez highlighted this year's Golden Globe Awards, which also recognised numerous first-time winners. Emilia Pérez, the crime-thriller musical headed into the ceremony with a leading 10 nominations. The unconventional Netflix film, maintained its momentum with four wins including a best supporting actress victory for a passionate Zoe Saldaña. "I'm filled with adrenaline, but my heart is full of gratitude," she said as tears ran down her cheeks.
The awards lauded Sh•gun with wins in four nominated categories. All were first-time winners, along with Saldaña, Brazilian actress Fernanda Torres (best actress in a drama for I'm Still Here), Adrien Brody (best actor in a drama for The Brutalist) and Demi Moore (best actress in a comedy or musical film for The Substance).
Both, Brody and Moore turned reflective in their acceptance speeches, with Brody referencing the theme of immigration in The Brutalist, which also won best drama. "The many people who have struggled immigrating to this country, I hope this work stands to lift you up a bit and to give you a voice," he said. Moore, meanwhile, expressed surprise at her win, eloquently sharing that 30 years ago, a producer demeaned her abilities by telling her she was merely a "popcorn actress." This was Moore's first major industry award in her high-profile 45-year career.
